Jane Eyre is a strong fictional character who embodies the idea of self-reliance. This is evident in the different parts of her life, from being abused by her aunt, going to school and losing her closest friend, and her life with Mr Rochester and leaving him for her own principles. To deal with all of these situations shows her extreme self reliance and sense of self, especially for the time period the story is set in. She "speak(s) what you think today in words as hard as cannon balls, and tomorrow speak(s) what tomorrow thinks in hard words again" through and through the time in the story, showing her character as someone with strong principles and her own independence.

The song that reminds me of the Emerson's excerpt is "Survivor" by Destiny's Child. Despite their distinct differences in language, they both reflect a strong similarity in their call for self-reliance. Lyrics that I saw paralleling the essay include Destiny's Child's "You thought that I'd be weak without you, but I'm stronger... Thought I wouldn't grow without you, now I'm wiser, thought that I'd be helpless without you, but I'm smarter", which has similarity to Emerson's idea that "Man in his own star; and the soul that can render an honest and a perfect man", as well as an excerpt that describes how we "must take himself for better". The connection between Destiny's Child strength without a man and their own personal growth as a result of self reliance pairs itself well with Emerson's similar call for humans to be independent for the better.
