Pocahontas was born in 1596, she was a Native American and her real name was Mataoka. She was a daughter of the Powhatan tribe chief. Pocahontas was captured by the English in 1613. During her captivity, she converted to Christianity and took the name of Rebecca. She married an Englishman. She acted as an emissary between the English settlers and her own people. She also helped the colonists by providing them with food when they were in danger of starvation. Thanks to her action there a climate of peace was established between English colonist and the local American native.
