This represents the way the Kelvey's are seen; low class and unwanted. Also including the quote, “Lil Kelvey’s going to be a servant when she grows up” pg. 205 paragraph 30. The advantage that the other children take over the Kelvey's keeps them farther and farther away from society. The author uses examples of celebrities who were teased in school like Taylor Swift and J.K Rowling to argue that what may separate certain students from their peers can be what gives them an advantage in their adult life. “In the rabidly conformist school environment, the qualities that make people different make them targets. In adulthood, however, the qualities that make people different make them compelling” (paragraph 2). It tries to open our eyes and really question ourselves if the Other really is significantly different from us. It mainly lays down a foundation of who we are and how we choose to interact with a newcomer and allows us to question our ways of interaction. We are all Others- foreigners to one another, and how we encounter each other will determine whether or not we communicate and come together. Some evidence that relates to our statement that being different can be an asset is “Doors and gates are not only for closing against the Other- they can also open for him and welcome him inside.” (Paragraph 16 page 235) Being different may sometimes cause you to be isolated from others and opportunities, but being different can also have unique positives and welcome you to a world of acceptance where people are just like you. Another example could be this : “In this sense, we’re all in the same boat. All of us inhabitants of our planet are Other for Others…” (Para. 23 Pg. 236). We are all an outsider, an Other, and we have our own separations and abilities that make us different from one another in a variety of ways.

For The Doll’s House the song “God Help The Outcasts’ from the movie Hunchback of Notre Dame, can relate to the story and is a perfect example. It describes a gypsy and many people she knows, who don’t meet the standards of society. They don’t fit in or are not “good enough.” After witnessing the way Quasimodo (main character) is treated by society, she is devastated and wishes for all outcasts to receive the things they deserve like love and mercy. In the Doll’s House story, Kezia was not considered an outcast, but when thinking about the way she is treated by her aunt, she could be thought of as strange for wanting to help the Kelvey’s who were the outcasts. I included this first image because of the example in the article when the author suggested that sometimes intelligent people feel like they can't get a girl/boyfriend. This picture proves that notion wrong. Another image may be two different groups coming together to form one community, showing unity and comprehension of the other.
