I talked with Meliah Taylor, School Counselor at Bradford Elementary in San Angelo, Texas. Mrs. Taylor discussed the importance of prevention and response for sexual violence and provided some experiences she has faced during her role as a counselor at Bradford.

Why Sexual Violence Prevention and Response is important?
Mrs. Taylor discussed the importance of prevention and response by explaining that many students within our school have experienced sexual violence in some form or fashion. Prevention is the efforts of trying to stop unnecessary acts that cause harm to someone. Mrs. Taylor discussed how to effectively communicate the importance of sexual prevention and response to parents and staff members.

Best Practice:

Adhere to the legal responsibilities of the role of the school counselor including the unique legal and ethical principles of working with minor students in a school setting

Use presentation skills to share effectiveness data and results of action plans and activities with administrators, advisory councils, teachers, faculty and staff, families, school boards and stakeholders

Respond with appropriate intervention strategies to meet the needs of the individual, group or school community before, during and after crisis response

Emerging Issue:
While sexual violence can occur on elementary campuses, it is more likely to occur within high school and college settings. Many students who experience sexual violence experience it at a young age and then their are concerns that they will potential take that with them later on in life and effect someone else. There are ways to show response by training staff members on the specifics of what sexual violence is and who to report to if an issue ever came up in the school setting.

Meliah Taylor, School Counselor, Bradford Elementary: http://schools.saisd.org/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=31008&&PHPSESSID=fd46030fa2c9f03ab7b6a74bb1b0926b
