Criterion A: Communication

The first criterion on IB internal assessment is communication. This is the most important part of the student's work as it shows how he tells others about his thought and work. This is not just about using impressive vocabulary but to take care of following:
Order of presentation is that you clearly know where to start from and take the reader through a logical path leading to a successful conclusion. In case the order does not follow a logic then it must lead to confusion. This is a very important area for assessment as it shows how a candidate perceives the audience and knows how to tell them the right way so they understand and make sense out it.
The logical reasoning and purpose of investigation are both to the present in the investigation. A work is not acceptable if it has no logic or reasoning given.
Good communication is important to demonstrate ideas. Even a very good idea may get poor marks if not well presented. The maximum marks are 4 for this criterion for an investigation which is well organized, all discussions are relevant, follow the limit of presentation and there is a conclusion.

Criterion B: Mathematical presentation

When mathematical exploration is being done by a candidate it has to include standard mathematical symbols and language. For instance all mathematical equations must be in standard notation form as used in mathematics. The proper terminology should be followed like a function has to be called a function and a variable has to be properly defined as dependent or independent. Where conclusions or results are based on data or graphs, the same should be drawn with proper notation, scale and defining mathematical equations. Necessary definitions and explanation of a new concept be made using standard mathematical language and symbols. It is important for candidates to understand the importance of standardization of mathematical symbols and terminologies for global sharing and communication with others working on mathematical investigations.
The maximum marks for this criterion are 3

Criterion C: Personal engagement

This is one of the difficult areas of assessment. The reason is personal engagement is purely an abstract object which can only be detected through the work. There is no direct question from candidate in this regard rather the teacher has to very closely and deeply examine how much ownership of the work was claimed by the candidate? There are ways of assessing it but unfortunately it can only be based on what candidate has submitted for assessment in writing and not on any other outstanding work done out of internal assessment. The work has to show interest of the student in the selected topic. The comments about choosing a topic can be helpful. The research done by the candidate and effort in gathering information, effort in using information and finally the effort made in conclusion can reflect the personal engagement. In some cases the investigation might link to an area of interest of the candidate very well but it must be supported by a sincere effort. An exploration which might fail to get marks in this area might be a routine work based on some already done without any effort to analyze except mere repetition of a mathematical working.
Use of words, "I think", "I tried ", " I am sure" " "I found it very interesting/surprising when ..." do give some indication of personal engagement.
The maximum marks in this area are 4 for a creative, independent and innovative use of mathematics.
