How does power and oppression manifest and impact society?

From what resonated with me is how the crucible along with the essential question listed above, is relevant to other controversial issues. Currently for generations our society has been embedded with racial injustice. Mainly on how higher authorities take advantage of their particular role, and use it against other races unfairly. Lack of justice towards specific groups are treated as minorities, begin to fight against the system to improve our society. Concluding that the connection between the crucible and society is relatable. Adding to how, the controversy among the witchcraft pursued those who were innocent to fight against their unfounding accusations, as they were viewed as an outsider.

Most people weren't actually sick but because of stress and because everyone else was 'infected' they too thought they were infected and the fear spread. Similar to what happened in the crucible in how the girls all started to pretend because everyone else they were close too also pretended to be 'infected' and their false accusations led to the hysteria of the whole village.

In the crucible since the beginning I have looked at it with the perception that the women wanted to rebel. In their society they are told time after time on what to do/ not to do. They must be modest they must be a good wife and a joy for God, but what if they didn't want that. They wanted to rebel and pretend in witch craft to show the society they cannot control them. RBG is someone who argued for gender equality, everyone thought she was crazy but she proved them all wrong. Even though fighting for gender equality is very different then these girls "participating in witch craft" but, the feeling for rebellion from being treated differently was similar for both. The movie On the Basis of 🤬 about RBG shows the discrimination women face and how they are treated less then in society just like in the crucible. This tied into the essential question about the ones accepted in society and the ones who are on the outside and thought less then.

The Crucible can be comparable to the justice system in the United States. I say this because as seen in The Crucible the girls have a huge amount of say in the case even though they are accusing people that are innocent and have no proof. In the justice system we see, primarily black men, being incarcerated and beaten because of crimes they are accused of and half of the time are not even true. In both of these situations, we see innocent people being falsely accused and are facing consequences to something that they did not do or are being accused of with no proof.

Wrongful accusations and false imprisonemnt was common specially for those of color and women who where unmarried. The way that people would be judged was unfair. A white girl can can be caught doing something that can be portrayed as witch craft and she can say that it was the black women from across the street that made her do it and she would be exonerated for her crimes and the unlucky black women that was wrongfully accused would then be wrongfully imprisoned or killed.

The Crucible's judicial system can be compared to the United State's. This is because in The Crucible, the girls are clearly controlling everything and accusing whoever they like since everyone will believe them even if they don't have proof. Something similar happens in the US since when there is a white man in the court, everyone will believe them no matter what, but when it comes to African Americans, it's another story. Because there is racism in this society, some people will believe the white man over the African American because of the color of their skin. In conclusion it connects since people would believe the girls/a white man without proof of anything since they "trust" them so much.

https://news.gsu.edu/research-magazine/spring2020/incarceration
All of the sexism and racism in The Crucible reminds me of the Beverly corrupt justice system today. We all know the police are corrupt and prejudice, but so are the courts. Minorities and pot seem to always get harsher punishments in the court system today because of racism and prejudice, which reminds me of how quick everyone is to accuse women and the people of color ( Tituba ). It is very disgusting to see how barely anything has changed with all the injustice.

Many of the issues in the Crucible connect with current day issues like sexism, racism, and the corruption of the justice system. Racism plays a role when it comes down to the Crucible because the character Tituba was targeted first when looking for witches in the town and was also an easy scapegoat for Abigail. The audience also sees sexism play a major role when it comes down to who is in power, the audience sees that it is all basically men in power or men that are judges.

The way that the girls in the Crucible are so commonly falsely convicted and targeted represents what happens in the US court system very accurately. The society in the crucible and the modern society in the US are very similar, and I thought it was relevant how corrupt both court systems are. The mob mentality scares the population of the US and they make decisions without thinking. This plots the people of the US against each other.

So, I found a Prezi relating Slavery to The Crucible. When reading The Crucible I connected a few things to slavery, but I wasn't sure why. However, this Prezi does I believe does a good job explaining the similarities. It mentions how the Salem Witch Trials were happening in the same time period as slavery, how slaves were torched in similar ways to people who conversed with the devil, and how both slavery and the witch trials led to oppression. Overall, I find the similarities quite interesting. I think this connects with the essential question: "How does power and oppression manifest and impact society?" as they both deal with class, and abuse of power, with someone higher up forcing their opinions on people with lower status. Because of how the higher up treaded blacks, people of the lower class who respected the higher also considered blacks in this way. And in The Crucible, because the church is stressing that the devil and witches are so evil and corrupt, the lower townsfolk are almost manipulated to agree. It's not exactly the same but it's pretty simular.
