For example, a fast-moving roller coaster uses mechanical and potential and kinetic energy to move the roller coaster.

This type of energy is what charges your phone, but how? For electrical energy to go from the outlet to your phone, the energy is carried by what's called charged particles; charged particles are the parts of an atom that consist of an electric charge. These particles can build up into an object, which in this case from the example earlier, is your phone.

Can Energy Change?

Yes! Energy can change. An example of energy changing is simply a fan in your room moving. The reason why this is an example of energy changing is because the fan is connected to either an outlet on the roof or a wall and it depends on what source of energy your household uses but for this scenario let's say that you have a solar panel as your energy source. The solar panel collects radiant/light energy from the sun and then transforms that energy into electrical energy. That electrical energy is then transferred by more cords where it is again transformed into finally mechanical energy! That mechanical energy allows your fan to move to give you a circulation of air!

Don't you love listening to music in the car, in a concert, or while you have your headphones on? It's a nice experience but have you every wondered how you can hear these sounds and what it is you're hearing? The name is pretty self-explanatory, it's sound energy; but it is what this energy emerges as. Sound energy is energy carried by what is called sound waves. Sound waves are horizontal waves that can travel through matter; so the process of sound coming from let's say a Juke Box, its waves of sound energy travel through the surface of that Juke Box causing you to hear the sound. Ok, now we know how sound energy travels, but how is it made? Sound energy is created when an object vibrates, when that object keeps thrumming it produces sound, leading to sound energy.

If you look into the word thermal, it is associated with temperature. We know that temperature can either go hot or cold, but how does temperature go from hot to cold and cold to hot? Well looking all the way down to the molecular level, there are atoms, and these atoms are always moving no matter how still you hold an object. Let's say you are boiling water and you turn up the fuel, it will start to bubble and get hotter by the second; the water gets like this because those atoms vibrate faster and faster the higher the fuel temperature goes. Now that we know how thermal energy goes hot, it's time to learn how it can go cold. The reaction from boiling water is still an appropriate example, let's say you grab the very hot pot of boiling water and put it into the freezer, those atoms that were once vibrating are not slowing down, and eventually will 'stop' (realistically the atoms just get really, really slow).

When you see light, it is called visible light that is light energy. The further definition of visible light is that it is electromagnetic radiation; there is more than one type of light energy, but all of them have energy, that is why light energy is more properly called radiant energy. Radiant energy is carried by light itself, let's take the sun as an example; the suns raze is the light particles that carry radiant energy all across the world, or into a solar panel.

There are 3 different types of energy that are within our bodies: Thermal, Mechanical, and Chemical. Chemicals in our bodies might sound dangerous, but it really isn’t because it’s in fact natural. This type of energy is stored within the connection between atoms of matter, which keeps atoms together. These bonds are in food, and let’s say you are eating a delicious pizza, once you consume the pizza it is processed through your digestive tract; and your stomach has acids, which is a chemical. The acids separate the food between waste and useful nutrients, and all of that process involves chemical energy.

Can an object transfer more than one type of energy?

Yes! An object can in fact transfer more than one type of energy. An example of this would be simply a person eating some food. Let’s say they are eating some chicken for lunch. The chicken can provide the body’s ability to have chemical energy and mechanical energy. When a person consumes food, the food will then be broken down and absorbed by the body to provide nutrients. Then, the nutrients will be the fuel for the body to preform mechanical energy tasks. This can all happen just from eating a piece of chicken! Another example of an object transferring more than one type of energy is when a campfire is lit. The fire can produce radiant energy and at the same time thermal energy.

Can Energy be Created or Destroyed?

This question is fairly simple because there is already a clue to the answer. There is a ‘law’ that goes “Matter cannot be created or destroyed.” To be more clear, matter cannot simply be destroyed because let’s say you are camping and you make a fire with wood, once that fire burns out, there will be ashes and smoke and imagine you somehow contain all the smoke produced by the fire. If you weigh the mass before and after the fire burnt-out, it will be exactly the same. And matter cannot be be created means that it cannot be reversed because of the chemical reaction. This applies with the question of ‘can energy be created or destroyed?’ Because energy is matter, energy cannot created or destroyed.

How does Energy Flow?

To find the answer for this question, we first need to know what is energy flow. Energy flow is simply a process in which energy goes through organisms or technical systems. Now we know what energy flow means and we can use this information to help us understand how it flows, we can use the picture above as an example because it involves many different types of energy. We see a girl using a bicycle to power a generator that heats up a tank of water. The originating energy is chemical energy that comes from the girl, then, there is mechanical energy from the bicycle with the small addition of thermal energy because of the vibration of the gears, next, is the generator converting mechanical to electrical energy that powers the hot coil, lastly, it is back to thermal energy in the boiling water that then turns into hot steam. We can see that energy flows through the many processes to make something work.
