Blues music used to make spirtuals, work songs, shouts and chants. Blues as a genre possesses other characteristics such as lyrics, bass lines and insterments. Many elements, such as the call-and-response format and use of blue notes, can be traced back to the music of Africa. Blues music grew from the folk of african-amarican slaves in the southern states of the US.
