If you had siblings of the opposite sex, did you notice different child-rearing practices being followed? What were some of those differences?

I am the oldest in my family, with my sister who is two year youngers being in the middle and my youngest brother being born 9 years after me. I think now that he is a teen I am starting to see these differences. My parents are in a pretty different place from when they had me vs now with my brother. They are financially better off and older, my sister and I are both adults now so they don't need to look after us as much, and can use that time more towards my brother. They also have the experience of what they went through with my sister and I, instead of having to navigate everything the first time as they did with me.

Was competition or cooperation stressed?

Cooperation was definitely more stressed in my family, especially between my sister and I. Since we were two years apart it caused some conflict when we were younger, and we fought a lot more back then. Even outside of our family, competition wasn't really anything that was pushed onto me. For example the achievements that I got in school were celebrated, and they were just happy with whatever we did as long as we were always trying our best and doing what we really really wanted.

In general, would your family be classified as formal or informal?

Definitely informal. We were taught basic etiquette, but we weren't expected to address our parents by calling them sir or ma'am. It was a pretty comfortable atmosphere growing up where we could be casual to each other but we still had respect for our parents. We are able to joke with each other, and our dinners are also pretty informal. I believe that with us being informal with each other, it's why we were able to talk about anything with each other.

Who made the major decisions in your family? Mother?Father? Both? Other family members?

I would say that they both were able to discuss with each other and then make the decision together. With me being the oldest, there would be times where they might come to me and ask how I felt about something, before bringing it up to my younger siblings. Or sometimes they would ask us all as a family how we felt about something, and we would make the decision together, so that they could get our input.

How were you rewarded?

I don't think I really ever asked to get a reward in exchange for things such as good grades. They always acknowledged my siblings and I for our achievements, and for big achievements such as our graduations, we went out for dinner/threw a party for me. I think I just thought it was expected of me to get good grades and behave, so I didn't really push for rewards. Especially since I felt like I always had what I needed, I didn't push for the rewards.
