It's a way of speaking or writing to make something sound better than it actually is. They use it to make a point, to show emphasis or to be more humorous. Hyperbole is not meant to be taken literally. You can find hyperbole in creative writing (fictional books) and speaking.

A simile compares two things with the words 'like' or 'as'. That isn't necessary for hyperbole. It is not (always) exaggerating.
Metaphor
A metaphor has to be taken figuratively. It is using one thing to represent something very different.
