Oral tradition: Most literary works during the Pre-Colonial period of the Philippines were passed down through oral tradition. This means that stories, songs, and poems were memorized and recited by bards and storytellers.

Here are some types of oral tradition: 

 

Folklore: Folklore includes myths, legends, folktales, and fairy tales that are orally transmitted within a community. 

Epic Poetry: Epic poetry consists of long narrative poems that celebrate heroic figures and their extraordinary feats. 

 

Oral Histories: Oral histories involve the transmission of historical accounts, genealogies, and communal memories through spoken narratives. 

 

Proverbs and Sayings: Proverbs and sayings are concise and memorable statements that encapsulate cultural wisdom, moral values, and practical advice. 

 

Ritual and Ceremonial Texts: Oral tradition plays a significant role in the performance of rituals and ceremonies.

 

Verbal Arts: Verbal arts encompass various forms of artistic expression through spoken language. 

 

Riddles and Puzzles: Riddles and puzzles are posed as challenging questions or situations that require creative thinking and problem-solving to find the solution. 

 

Songs and Ballads: Oral tradition encompasses the transmission of songs, ballads, and chants through generations.

 

In this activity, all students will form into a circle. Then, they will create a storytelling circle where each of them will share their own stories or tales inspired by oral tradition. Afterwards, one student will volunteer to be the first storyteller and after he/she will  invite another participant to continue the storytelling, either by sharing their own story or responding to the previous story with a related tale.
