Next-Day Completion of Testing

ML/ELL students with a time extension are able to take a scheduled content exam on the following day from their peers, if they are scheduled to take two continues content-area exams. The principal of the school must approve. MLs must complete the first scheduled assessment and begin part of the second scheduled assessment before being granted time the following day to return to and finish the second assessment.

Separate Location

MLs can take their Regents content-area assessments in a separate location from peers. They can be in a smaller group or individual placement.

Bilingual Dictionaries and Glossaries

MLs can use bilingual dictionaries and/or glossaries on content-area assessments. The dictionaries can only provide word-for-word translations, and not definitions or further explanations.

Simultaneous Use of English and Alternative-Language Editions

ML students are able to use 2 test booklets for Regents Exams. 1 test booklet should be English and the other is their L1, as long as NYSED provides the exam in that language. Students should record all answers in 1 booklet.

Oral Translation for Lower Incidence Languages

ML students whose L1 is a language not provided by NYS in written format are allowed to have the test read to them in their L1. Students cannot have the test read in English, and no writing can be provided by the translator.

Writing Responses in the Native Language

ML Students who are provided an alternative-language test or oral translation of the English test book are allowed to write open-ended responses to the test questions in their L1. The school should find a suitable person (who speaks/is proficient in the students L1) to grade that portion of the assessment.
