Signs such as this signify legal boundaries and expectations of behavior for anyone who is passing through this area. A key part of citizenship is an agreement to respect the rules and boundaries as laid out by civic, provincial and federal laws.

Why did you take a picture of this?

It’s a lot of signs in one place, for starters – which is why I stopped to notice them and wonder about how many rules and laws each and every person is subject to and participates in every day, both implicit and explicit, in order to ensure a community can function well. It leaves me wondering: how do all these rules and laws come into being, why, and how do they work together to create social order? Do they work for everyone? Do they represent the concerns of all citizens? And if not, how do we respond constructively?

What does this picture tell us about your understanding or beliefs about citizenship/identity today?

I have always been someone who believes in “following the rules” – even when it’s hard, or they don’t represent my perspectives or needs. I do this because I believe that my needs aren’t the only ones that are important, but also because I play an important role in helping to maintain harmony and justice in my community. However, I also know that not all laws and rules protect or serve everyone – so when should I be challenging those rules and laws? And how do I do that? What role can I play as a citizen in elevating the safety, security, and health of my community for the benefit of all?

How can this picture provide opportunities for us to expand our notion of what citizenship/identity is now?

I think this picture can invite a greater discussion with students about the law – what it is, what it means, what it’s for, how it’s made, by whom…and for whom. More importantly, such discussions can empower students to explore and question Canadian law as an exercise in ethical citizenship. It’s all part of students “…understanding the role of social, political, economic and legal institutions as they relate to individual and collective well-being and a sustainable society.” (Alberta Education, 2005: Program Rationale and Philosophy, Social Studies K-12, p. 2.).

I think this image is great and it speaks to the discussion around what makes a good citizen. Following rules and laws absolutely an important element of citizenship. This also makes me wonder about unwritten rules and how they play a role in citizenship.
