In this story the Crosses are blacks who are superior to the noughts who are whites. What a flip of today's world. I also can infer that this story will have strong tones of racism and segregation, as well as romance. I also believe that Sephy, the protagonist, will rise among the rest to try to change the Crosses's opinion of noughts and vice versa.

Sephy, who is a cross, and Callum, who is a nought. However their love is forbidden. It has a very similar concept to The Shakespeare Story, Romeo and Juliet. Critics have said that this is a brilliant novel which takes you through a world of emotions. The front cover of the book gives us a lot of information in which the story is about. The opposite colours on the front tell us that there is a lot of separation between the noughts and the crosses. The Crosses being on the top portrays that they are a higher class than noughts.
