Black Kids by Christina Hammonds Reed is a good read for those who would like to learn about systemic racism that can be found in our country through the eyes of a teenager.  Although the setting is in Los Angeles in the year 1992, we as readers can identify many parallels between the 90s and modern-day society.  While following the storyline of an African American teenager being forced to tolerate a life destined to be judged, oppressed, and tracked by the color of our skin, we also have the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of racism that have an impact on us.

For instance, we were able to learn how racism can cause even those who are forced to suffer from the negatives or causes to develop an identity built on not liking or judging the very essence of who they are. In doing so, consequences were derived from the self-hate the main character was taught to implement all throughout her life in order to not only fit in society but also her own social group....although this book was an enjoyable read, I do wish there was less focus on the romantic aspects of the novel. Zofia travels to a displaced persons camp in Allied-occupied Germany and begins her search. Along the way she meets new friends, learns new thing, and experiences important life events.
