A boy, named Charlie, a 12 year old, who was trapped in the basement comes to find that he had been locked when he went to the bathroom outside. When this happens a figment of the boys imagination appears and chases him to a light, where he passes out. Then he is taken to the hospital where it was found out that was quite ill. Charlie has to struggle with many mental issues as his journey continues.
When he is released from the hospital, it does not go as he expected. He has to enter social services, and learn everything that he had not learned in his first 12 years of life. He had to do this while also struggling with his identity, the figment of his imagination that is following him around, and adjusting to a world that he never experienced. Truly it was battle between what was his imagination which he thought was real and a "real reality"

A Book Review

I really enjoyed The Boy in the Basement, by Susan Shaw. it was well written and really gave a clear insist into the person who was struggling with the mental illness. Specifically when the boy has to fend off the spider that he has made up in his mind, he completely believes that it was real. It was explained to him that is was not yet it still seemed completely real and threatening to him. The author went through the whole process of how the boy got rid of the spider at the end of the book and I found that the most interesting. It was also showed attached he was to his parents specifically his father who abused him. I do believe that these were accurate depictions of these mental illnesses. Because of how this book was written it was as if you were experiencing it along with the boy. I would defiantly recommended this book to others, because of how well the illnesses were depicted. I think anyone interested in mental illness would like this book, or someone possibly going in to criminal justice, because they might have to deal with children who had to be abused.

MESSAGE OF THE DAY - " 'Charlie.' I say, and cringe against the smack. I told you not to speak! But - But nothing! There is no smack." (Shaw, 23)

The psychologists just came to meet Charlie, she had introduced herself, and was asking his name. Charlie did not want to make the spider mad because then the spider would hurt him. So when he finally did answer he was expecting what his abusive father would have gave him, a smack to his face. Of course, this would not be received because his father was not there and also the psychologist would not hurt. I think that this is a powerful quote because he had reality when he was with his parents that now affect everything that he is going through without them any where near. It truly shows how deeply he had been traumatized by how abused he was. This really affected me because I was shocked by how abused he was and how deeply it psychologically affected.

CHILD ABUSE PSA - https://youtu.be/-sFRt-dotN0
This book is based on child abuse and the trauma that can come from it, Charlie was very abused, he was hit, neglected, locked in the basement, and also was not allowed an education. This was very traumatic and he developed mental illnesses. The girl in the video was abused as well, her mother locked her out of the house, just like Charlie would have been locked in the basement.
