Johnston took advantage by attacking grant at Shiloh on the Tennessee river( April 6th). Union was close to defeat but great effort by grant caused the attack to be halted and then driven back. The Union had successfully killed Johnston, which caused the replacement by Peirce G.T. Beauregard to order a withdraw. In the end the Union forces which was the main aggressor during the battle, suffered 13,000 men while the confederacy had only suffered 10,500. One event that proves that Grant (The union) were the main aggressors was that Grant had planned to march on corinth Mississippi to major general Albert S. Johnston with 40,000 of his men.

“Battle of Shiloh.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., www.britannica.com/event/Battle-of-Shiloh.
