The governor of Massachusetts, Thomas Gage, greatly increased tensions between the colonists and Britain. He punished the colonists and had harsh enforcement of his laws. And by April of 1775, Gage was facing rebellion. He tried to prevent battle by seizing gunpowder supplies at Concord. But what he did not expect was the determination of the Americans to be free. Word got the Americans and they rushed to defend the supplies. No one knows who fired the first shot, but the Americans won the battle.

After a lot of tension between the Americans and British, a battle finally happened at Bunker Hill. Bunker Hill is actually Breed's Hill but is remembered as Bunker Hill. Before the battle the British planned to attack the north and south of Boston. But the plans were leaked and the Americans gathered to defend. They decided to defend Bunker Hill from the British. Enslaved and free African Americans fought in the battle as well. Even though the Americans lost, it signaled to the British that the Americans spirit would not be extinguished.

In the spring of 1781, General George Washington and his Continental Army needed to make a choice. They had 2 options. They could deal with the British in New York City or go after Cornwallis's men at Yorktown, Virginia. General Comte de Rochambeau, a French friend of Washington's, advised them to place their bet on the south. This was where they could count on crucial naval help from a French fleet under the leadership of Admiral Comte de Grasse. The biggest army movement of the American Revolution was carried out by the Allies. Their force marched hundreds of miles from their headquarters north of New York City to Yorktown. In a siege that stunned the British, they helped the Americans win the War for Independence.

In the year of 1777, the British decided to attack Saratoga. This attack was going to be a three pronged attack with three separate armies that would converge at Albany. The American soldiers had built their defenses on the Bemis Heights which was south of Saratoga. Even though the British managed to hold of the Americans, they suffered heavy losses. No reinforcements for the British came and their second attack failed as well. Eventually the British surrendered and this motivated France to help the American forces.

During the summer of 1777, British general John Burgoyne decided to attack the fort. This was because the fort controlled the Hudson River and access to Canada. Even though the Americans had made the forts defenses better, if they did not defend it well, it would be taken. They had also prepared two escape routes if the battle did not go well. When they learned that the British were trying to cut off their escape, they left the fort and joined other forces to fight the British. After the surrender of Saratoga, the British came and destroyed a lot of the defenses and left to go to Canada.
