No,France did not welcome Britain's joining of EEC in 1971.According to Source G,Britain was on the road to EEC.Britain was jumping accross the Netherland and Belgium and going to jump accross Luxemburg. However,France was a giant man which Britain can't jump across and France blocked Britain's road. Therefore,it shows that France was unwelcoming toward UK's joining of EEC.

To a large extent was EU in a favourable position in world trade in the period 1993 to 99. According to Source H, the trade balance of EU is from -1.4 in 1993 to 28.0 in 1995 to 48.6 in 1997. We can see that the trade balance of EU was increasing in 1993-1997. In 1995, the value turns from - to + . This means the EU has an increasing trade balance and attain surplus in these years. In 1995-1997, the data were even larger than countries like USA, Russia, China. These show that the EU was in a favourable position in world trade in 1993-1999 to large extent. However, according to Source H, in 1999, the trade balance of EU dropped to -19.6. This was lower than other countries like Russia, China, Japan. This shows that to a small extent the EU was in an unfavourable position in world trade in 1993-1999.

To a large extent, I agree.

Firstly, the Britain and France cannot unite together to build up the EEC. From Source G, the topic mentioned that it was the ‘on the road towards the European Economic Community, Britain(the woman) can easily climb through the three men(Luxembourg,The Netherlands and Belgium). However, France is very tall which is hard for Britain to climb through, and France is the last person Britain need to climb through. This shows that the France decided to hinder the path of Britain to join the EEC, causing the Europe can’t unite together, facing challenge.

Secondly, the Euroscepticism come out with the formation of EU. From my own knowledge, after the formation of EU, some members states regarded the EU as an undemocratic organisation which the decision-making process was controlled by the major powers, this urge the people to support withdrawing EU such as the Kingdom Independence Party in Britain, National Front in France. This causes the economic integration becomes more difficult with the objection of people on the EU, which harm the European Union that help economic integration. This shows another challenge faced by the economic integration.

Moreover, the European Union started the economic integration from Secondary production to tertiary production. From source H, EU had a negative trade balance in 1999.This imply that the value of goods exported was smaller than goods imported within the EU.

Though the export volume decreased, according to my own knowledge, it actually showed EU’s trend of integration from secondary production(manufacturing) to tertiary production(providing services), showing opportunities for EU members to ride on the trend for further integration

To a larger extent, I agree that Europe experienced more challenges than opportunities in economic integration in the period 1971-99.

Firstly, the relationship between the Brits and the French is not a rapport. From the source G, France became the largest barrier to the UK joining the EEC. Although the Brit jumped over the blockade of Benelux. However, the French showed their unwillingness toward the UK. Also, the French didn't want to be resigned to the Brits since they didn't shrink like the Benelux. It shows the poor relations between the UK and France, which make the European economy difficult to integrate.

Secondly, the Western and Eastern European countries can't freely trade. According to my knowledge, the USSR forced its satellite states in Eastern Europe, like Poland and Czechoslovakia, to join the COMECON led by themselves. Didn't allow the participants of COMECON to trade with Western Europe. Also required them to service the Soviet Five-year Plan by providing the resources of the Eastern European countries. This caused the closeness of Eastern Europe, challenging the economic integration of Europe until 1991.

This caused the closeness of Eastern Europe, challenging the economic integration of Europe until 1991.

However, the set-up of the euro zone encourages the economic integration of Europe. From my knowledge, the EC participants signed the Treaty on the European Union in 1991, setting up the rules of the single currency of the EU. Then, 11 EU countries used the euro officially in 1999, which means the euro zone was set up in 1999. The set-up of the euro zone eliminates the currency exchange cost and encourages trade between the European countries. So to a large extent, I agree that Europe experienced more challenges than opportunities in economic integration in the period 1971-99.
