The picture was taken at our school canteen. On the board stated the fact that the most expensive meal had already been sold out. Such a phenomenon may hint at the potential wealth of our university students or professors. The former is our main concern as the latter comes as no surprise when professors' earnings are much greater than ubdergraduates. It is quite thought-provoking when contemplating the discrepancy in the financial capability of undergraduates.

 If we assume that undergraduates should be preoccupied with mostly school work, at best with some portion of time allocated to part time job, then it may be appalling to witness the phenomenon that some undergraduates enjoy a higher purchasing power than their counterparts. A possible source of income, apart from salary earned from part time job, may be the family. Perhaps some undergraduates receive more pocket money thanks to their relatively higher socio economic status of their family. We are not jealous of this group of students; instead this prompts us to ponder over factors breeding such discrepancy in purchasing power.

 Honestly speaking, the inability to afford an expensive meal is never a sound testimony to our suffering of poverty, in terms of the absolute one. It may be, however, appropriate for some of the poorer undergraduates of EDUHK to claim that they are relatively poorer than those who can purchase whatever they like to improve their quality of life. This photo serves the purpose of reminding us of the ubiquity of poverty, and this is especially true if we define poverty as the failure to gratify our desire to buy whatever we like. With a closer examination, it dawns on us that when compared to those living under the poverty line who can hardly fulfill such basic needs as a nutriuos diet, we, the less wealthy undergraduates, and those richer, are a lot more fortunate.
