Matariki is the name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. Every year it rises around mid winter. In New Zealand it comes up usually around late May or early June. For many Maori's the rising of the Matariki signifies the starting of a new year. Different tribes celebrate Matariki at different times. For some it's when the Matariki rises; so either in late May or early June. For others they celebrate it on the first new moon or full moon following the rising of the Matariki. Matariki is a good time to grow crops because it would ensure great crops for the next year. Theres lots of legends But the one I was looking at went like this:
There was a small village next to a large lake that was the home to the Taniwha. At night the Taniwha would come out and get whatever food he could find, this scared the villages so no one would ever come out at night. One day a boy called Tamarereti. Tamarereti wake up one morning with his tummy grumbling. He went out fishing and was very happy hen he caught three big fish. But then he realised that the wind had gone and he had no way of getting home. He decided that he could sleep for a little bit and hopefully when he woke up there would be wind and he could return home. When he woke up a few hours later the wind picked up a lot and had pushed him to shore ages away from his village. he was still extremely hungry and cooked one of his fish. It was starting to get and he knew he would have to get back to the village before the big Taniwha came out to eat. While he was cooking his fish he noticed some glowing pebbels beside his fire. He gathered as many as he could and put them on his boat. He through them into the pitch black sky to create light that would hopefully keep the Taniwha away. It worked and he got home safely.
