Canada is built on a foundation of colonialism, as a former British colony. Our systems and history are steeped in racial capitalism and the modern expression of this can be seen in our international neocolonial policies, in the disproportionate incarceration of indigenous people, and the labor exploitation of those hoping to become Canadian citizens. Rather than a past that is long gone, it is essential to see these as ongoing problems if we are going to address them. Filipino care givers, international students, and those isolated in poorly developed reservations are some examples.

Racial capitalism does persist/exist in Canada.

When indigenous people are denied their rights to their land because of government policies, dispute emerges. For instance, mistranslation of treaties, residential schools, or even with holding food rations were used to eliminate the voice of Indigenous peoples.

Labour exploitation, such as mass immigration, leads to underwages, illegal employment to survive. Moreover, the legacy of labour exploitation.

Women don't have equal pay in Canada due to historical gender disparities. In the last 28 years, there has been little progress in bridging the gap in women's pay. This is seen as an ongoing social inequality in Canada.

Police brutality towards African Americans and Indigenous people is due to historical bias and stereotypes. There is evidence of high rates of incarceration.

Discrimination occurs in every sector in Canada such as, Indigenous, LGBTQ, and women, which led to legacy ideoglogies that have been carried/passed to generations which resulted to generational trauma.

The seasonal Agriculturual Worker Program is a form of racial capitalism. The distribution of labour is unequal. Participants of this program weren't given the same rights as domestic workers. Migrant farm workers are overworked, abused, unsafe working conditions, low wages, and unable to apply for PR or Citizenship.

Racial minorities face higher rates of poverty, systemic racism and land theft. These inequalities are held up by capitalism and the build up of generational wealth or lack thereof. Further, the exploitation of migrant workers is linked to the disparities between countries and economies that were expounded during colonialism and the Atlantic slave trade. Another example of labour exploitation is the filipina migrant workers, who are placed into low-paid and under valued jobs like care aids and care takers.

In Canada, racial capitalism we think of the exploitation of migrant workers for the use of cheap labour, to do the jobs that no one else wants to. This may be for something like retail workers, agriculture, homecare, and other low paying jobs through the Temporary Worker Program. Since 2018, they started pushing towards requesting aid for healthcare workers through the program - people like nurses, nurse's aids, and orderlies, and more underpaid healthcare positions. It's often showed that this program is a good thing, but most of these people do not gain much in reality, like having a better chance at gaining citizenship, and often are just sent back to their home countries afterwards.

The roles that Black women were forced into (domestic labour/subservient service positions) continue to be occupied by women of colour. Jamaican and Mexican women for example are represented in media as nannies and caretakers in white families. On the other hand, overqualified immigrants rarely have the same opportunities as born-Canadians due to bias, networking barriers, and foreign credentials and experiences not being recognized.
