Unfair Advantage

I chose this quote because it makes it clear that advocacy is not always equitable. Some children have parents that have the advantage of being able to advocate effectively for them. While other parents may have many barriers that make it harder to get their children help. Barriers may include language, culture, lack of education, lack of knowledge of the Canadian education system and their rights.

I connect this quote to Shared Solutions’ (Ontario Ministry of Educaiton, 2007) information about parent advocacy (p.27). They discuss how parent advocacy works best when parents have communication skills, are familiar with special education programs, policy, and the school system. Parents from other countries, who speak other languages or have lower education, are at a disadvantage in all these areas.

I also connect it to the Standards of Practice: Commitment to Students and Student Learning. It says that teachers need to make sure learning is equitable and sensitive to student’s individual factors. This means that we need to remember that not all students will have effective advocate but that this does not mean they deserve less than other students.
