Isolation is one of the primary reasons behind depression and affects a large number of people today. There could be multiple reasons for an individual to feel socially isolated from others, including physical deformations, mental disorders, long term illness, being introverted, and many more.

Gregor started facing social isolation when his physical form had changed to one of a vermin. He was not looked at and treated the same way as before, which negatively affected his mental health causing him to lose the will to live. The family’s detestation towards Gregor grew by day as he was not able to do anything expected by his family due to his new physical form. Since he was the sole provider for the family, his disability rendered him useless. Towards the end, Gregor was not able to live any longer from all the agony he was going through. He was left alone, isolated from the world receiving no love or affection from the people around him. All this was incepted from the change in his physical form.

In our lives, more often than not, we base our decisions on others' wants and desires, thus affecting our decision making in the process and also potentially influencing it. The reason we think the way we do can be directly associated with the current ‘trends’ in society which influence our choices. As these trends change, they result in a change in personality or way of thinking. For example in the text we can see that initially when Gregor had just turned into an insect he would attempt to communicate with his family, but as time went on he spoke lesser and lesser as he began to get influenced by his family’s thoughts, for ex: they all believed that Gregor couldn’t understand them. This adversely affected Gregor who began to believe that the issue was a lost cause. When he heard his sister say those words, he realized that his family had given up on him and therefore lost the will to live, as he realized that he was not wanted anymore. He was merely a liability to them

When Gregor's sister says “ I don’t want to call this monster my brother, all I can say is: we have to try and get rid of it.” This gives Gregor the final realization that he is no longer the brother and son his family recognizes but is just a burden on them now. Keeping this in his mind he has no purpose of living and is so isolated to the point where he does not mentally care and has given up trying to prove he is still himself inside the body of an insect.

All of this was a consequence of his change in his physical form which led to isolation, and eventually to his demise, indicating that isolation is as serious a cause as any other mental health issue and can drastically affect a person's lifestyle, thinking and their will to live.

The feeling of being ignored could affect a person’s life. This is because being ignored makes a person feel unwanted. This could lead to many dark thoughts. Not being understood could be very frustrating since you could be trying to send a person a very important message, but because they don't understand you, it could make you feel very uncomfortable. It could affect your sense of belonging and make you feel unwanted by others, which will most likely lead to abandonment and isolation.

Fares:

Yes, no one would truly understand what I might try to say. Because in my case my grammar is a little weak and the way I word my sentence grants others confusion. that way the others cannot understand what i'm trying to explain and soon this could cause some sort of argument between me and the other person i'm talking to. Because of this, I rarely attempt to talk to anybody, and this affects the way I speak and the way I interact with others around me. I just sit there, do nothing and not attempt to talk unless the others come in and talk to me.

Qais:

No, everyone understands what my point of view is, this is due to the people I talk to. Most people I talk to have similar characteristics compared to me, so it is easy for them to understand. There are a few times where I have gone through something whereby someone doesn’t understand what I am trying to say. This is because they don’t know me very well, or they don’t speak the same language as me, which means we can’t understand each other. Some people don’t understand what you are trying to say if they haven’t experienced anything similar.

Hamza:

No, I have never encountered such situations in my life as whenever I speak to someone, I ensure that I am using correct wording and correct language. In reality, I don't really attempt to talk to people that don’t know the language i use, because in such cases I use google translate to translate what i am saying instead of trying to talk in simple terms. Although I have never physically encountered it, I have had some dreams where I have encountered something similar. SInce as a kid, people tend to not listen to your seguestions, so I had some dreams which were probably caused by these moments in my life. In those dreams, I tend to feel very uncomfortable and frustrated, which is how I would imagine Gregor Samsa to feel in that same situation. I felt ignored and taken advantage of, which made me feel very frustrated in those dreams.

In conclusion, being ignored can give an individual the feeling of not having a sense of belonging. Sense of belonging is one of the basic needs of a person, and without it, it can make one feels really uncomfortable. Going through the stage of being ignored reflects to Gregor when he turned into a cockroach, because no one understood him as he wasn’t human. His family and the people that surrounded him didn’t understand what he was saying, his emotions, and how he lived his life. If anyone ever felt like there were being ignored or no one could understand them, they would have gone through similar feelings as Gregor.

Social media can have many implications on relationships. It can serve to bring people closer, but can also do the opposite. It can limit human interaction as people may feel fulfilled through online communication. In "How Social Isolation is Killing Us", Khullar describes how the digital age is introducing more health concerns due to limited cognitive stimulation as well as loneliness. The growing issue has had profoundly negative effects on the health and well-being of many people. Besides that, digital communication also has both pros and cons regarding the meaningfulness and sincerity of relationships. This begs the question, Can social media harmlessly facilitate meaningful connections between people?

For many years now, young people have maintained the fact that social media can provide real connection. An article published in 2018 by The Washington Post examplined that, for a few years, many teenagers have been saying that social media - despite its flaws is actually mostly positive. New research is shedding light on the many positives that social media has to offer. As children start to download and use apps such as instagram, snapchat, twitter and youtube they are not simply wasting time however they are learning responsibility that comes with the power to be able to broadcast media to the world. In majority of the cases it allows them to do good. Social media apps such as twitter and facebook expose children to important and vital issues that are current, it keeps them informed, updated and teaches them how to develop an opinion leading them to feel, and be apart of something. Additionally, it strengthens friendships, social media offers a sense of belonging to its users. Allowing people from all around the world to be so interconnected gived them a chance to be “online acceptance” whether a child in interested in unusual subjects that isnt considered cool in their community, or a child who just simply doenst fit in, is given the chance to find more of their kind online making them feel less isolated.

Social media in many ways can make you more connected to people around the world, however, since connections are not made face to face there can be many instances where people are met with lies, deception and other problems. I think that social media can definitely eliminate the fear of meeting someone new or facing anxiety, and can help shy or introverted people interac; but if these people were to meet in real life, their level of comfort might differ. Sometimes social media can be difficult to communicate information due to the absence of human expressions. Many statements can be misunderstood and therefore can start problems between individuals. The use of facial expressions, hand gestures and even sense of tone is not communicated or shown through conversations online. Social media, additionally, can be incredibly dangerous, especially for the younger generation (if not properly prepared). Since its not a face to face interaction, people are able to fake their personality, appearance and even age. Federal investigators believe there are more than 500,000 online predators active each day and they all have multiple online profiles. More than 50% of victims are ages 12 to 15. Therefore in some cases, despite the multiple connections you may make on social media, communication without a face to face interaction can be dangerous, especially for younger generations.

In conclusion, social media has its positives and its negatives. Yes social media does drift friends apart as they find new friends on social media. Social media has taken over the world and because of that friends are losing each other every day. We humans need to meet with our friends once a month in order to stay close. The positives is that you are able to find new friends everyday which is good because you have people to talk to. The negative is that you might not stay super connected with your old friends because you are finding new friends everyday. Social media overall is more positive than it is negative as it makes a person more happy as they have something to do throughout the day. The question at the end of the day is based on your opinion which is how has social media impacted your life?.

Relationship bonding is crucial to the development of children and stays crucial throughout all stages of life, it affects our social skills and plays a role in shaping who we are. Bonding and belonging develops a child in the sense that if they feel as though they are appreciated, valued, and respected within a community or amongst friends and family, an idea of who they are is created inside their head. The reassurance that you matter greatly affects your confidence and output within life, particularly so within social contexts.

The sound of the mother’s voice temporarily brings Gregor back to his human senses. Within the extract, Gregor begins to doubt his initial animalistic instincts which were brought about by his condition, as his mother’s doubts about moving his furniture causes him to realize the extent of the depravity that his condition has brought about with him – “Had he really wanted to transform his room into a cave, a warm room fitted out with the nice furniture he had inherited?” This extract from the text demonstrates the theme of disconnect between mind and body which is present throughout the text. Gregor’s change is temporarily halted when a person closely connected to him - his mother - makes him aware of the changed being he has become. Prior to this instance, Gregor had been relatively complicit with his metamorphosis – perhaps a nod to the complicity that workers under capitalism are a part of in order for the system to thrive.

When Gregor transformed into a bug, he lost the ability to effectively communicate with other humans - including his family. This situation also led to a complete lack of communication from his mother’s end as well, as to her, it felt like Gregor couldn’t understand her either. This led to a prominent feeling of loneliness for Gregor.

In Khullar’s article, he explained how loneliness has significant consequences on one’s mental health: it is scientifically proven to shorten one’s life-span. Hearing his mother’s voice for the first time in a while really touched Gregor, and made her point far more valuable to him than he would’ve expected it to be. His feeling of abandonment from his mother was juxtaposed by an instance of communication that he deerly sought after.
