Automation today mostly uses robotics and computer controls and electronic systems to do work. Which today automated factory's only need a few workers to run the factory. As a lot uses many other manufacturing process that are automated today such as additive manufacturing which adds materials automatically to build parts. Also today's automation uses robotic arms with various attachments and uses to assemble products to sell to consumers. Overall automation today can limit cost and mass produce items through computer controlled systems today to manufacturer products and some older automated system controllers. Also automation today has expanded to other reaches of our life such as in the home.

Automation was first used with water power and movement to mill thing such as flour to make flour more efficiently and faster than people milling. Then when the industrial revolution happened automation grew such as and automatic governor on a steam engine that powered a factory instead of a non automatic one. But automation really grew through the automobile industry which grew over time when GM and the Ford Motor companies had automatic assembly line parts but where still not the idea of automation today but besides advancing in the car industry Japan in the 1930's was the forefront of development creating the first micro switch and protective relays. Also at the same time the world realized the advantages of automation where a lot of research and development was taking place. Which lead into World War 2 where automation of equipment and supplies was in full swing which lead up tile the end of the war. Where the idea of automation and use lead to modern day with continuous improvements and advancements.
