Slavery (1619-1819)

Slavery was caused due to the need for products by the Europeans. Africans were brought from their country to America and were bought off by welathy whites. Once slaves were purchased, they were either brought to a plantation or a city where they would now work under their masters' commands. The working environment for slaves was inhumane, as many ended up dying before the end of their teenage years, due to things like health problems and harsh living conditions. After the Missouri Compromise was passed, a 36/30 line was now developed and seperated free from slave states. This now literally seperated the people of America, by having half the states own slaves and half not, which caused disagreements and more divisional tensions.

Kansas Nebraska Act (1854)

The Kansas Nebraska Act was created to resolve the issue of slavery in the territories, by using popular sovereignty. This act basically got rid of the 36/30 line that was created by the Missouri Compromise and allowed land above the line to be open to slavery. This caused sectional tensions to increase because of the Northern and Southern citizens beginning to have disagreements due to it. For example, slave owners in the South supported it, since it would give them more opportunities to make money and own slaves. On the other hand, the North and abolitionists opposed it, since the act would be supportive of slave-owners and the Southern states.

Election of 1860

The election of 1860 was caused by James Buchanan's first term ending, which called for an election. During the election the candidates were chosen by three different political parties. Republicans chose Lincoln, constitutionals chose John Bell, and Northern and Southern democrats split and Northerners chose Stephen Douglas and Southerners chose Breckenridge. The winner of the election was Abraham Lincoln although Lincoln wasn't presented as a candidate in most of the Southern states and he didn't get any Southern electoral college votes. This event severely deepened sectional tensions because Southerners believed they no longer had enough power in government. Evidence of this would be that Lincoln in the South had little to no support, and he still won the election. This represented to the Southerners that no matter how much they did to stop the republicans or northerners, the North would still hold majority power and would most likely keep increasing that power over the Southerners. This increased the talks of secession among the Southern states because they started to believe that since the Norths power was increasing, eventually they'll take over the South with their beliefs most importantly, their anti-slavery beliefs.

Compromise of 1850 / Fugitive Slave Act

The Compromise of 1850 was made to resolve disputes over slavery in new territories added to the United States. It consisted of 5 bills that included the Fugitive Slave Act. The Fugitive Slave Act was passed to capture runaway slaves and return them to their masters. The other 4 bills included Calfornia being added as a free state, the rest of the Mexican cession being divided into two territories with their choice to be free or slave areas, Texas being added to New Mexico, and the buying/selling of slaves being abolished in the District of Colombia. These bills being passed, led to there being a throw off of balance in the slave/free states criteria and the new land acquired being free of choice for further slave or free states (that will either make the balance worse or even again).

Dred Scott Case (1857)

The Dred Scott case occured due to a Missouri Slave suing for their freedom, due to his four year stay in the Northern half of the Lousiana Territory, that was eventually made free land, then made him a free slave. Once he presented his argument, the Supreme Court had came to the decision that since slaves were property and not citizens, he couldn't sue. Dred Scott’s case increased tensions between the North and South because it angered the North, due to him still being under slave-ways even though his master had died and he now was in the North (a non-slave area).

South Carolina Secedes (1860)

December 20th 1860, South Carolina seceded from the union after coming together in a state convention after Abraham Lincoln had been elected president. The secession of South Carolina contributed to rising sectional tensions that led to the Civil war because it set a precedent for other Southern states to follow in rebellion. Evidence of this would be Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceding, 3 months before the Civil war officially started. This means that sectionalism increased because the United States was now being physically divided into two different bodies with different beliefs, and this physical division further injected these beliefs into both sides making them even more divided and dogmatic towards their beliefs.

The Battle at Fort Sumter was the official beginning of the American Civil war. On April 12th Union solders were sent to resupply Fort Sumter down in South Carolina, they were then attacked by South Carolina troops until April 14th when the South Carolina troops surrendered. The battle would of course mark the beginning of the Civil War but would also cause more Southern states to secede from the union in hopes of aiding the South.

Mexican Cession (1848)

The Mexican secession represented the landmass given to the United States from the Mexican government after the Mexican-American War in the Treaty of Hidalgo Guadalupe. This event increased sectional tensions because people wanted to know how slavery would be handled in the new territories. Due to the Missouri Compromise's 36-30 line which passed through many of the new territories, both sides wanted to know how slavery was to be represented in the territories. However each side wanted to have the upper hand, so the idea of popular sovereignty began to be thrown around, which let the state choose their position on slavery. This deepened sectional tensions because southerners wanted this popular sovereignty because most of the territory was above the 36-30 line, but Southerners wanted to expand slavery, so a large support grew among Southerners. Although Northerners did not want popular sovereignty because they did not want slavery to expand any farther than in the South. So the Mexican secession caused a conversation about representation of states, which led to conversations about popular sovereignty which became another issue which further divided the belief systems between the North and South.
