The Sonoran and Milk snakes are similar because they evolved to mimick venomous prey and avoid predators. Sonoran Shovel and Mountain King Snakes as well as the Milk Snake have similar ringed patterns as the venomous, Sonoran Coral Snake; because, predators confuse other species for the aposematic coral snake as an occurrence of batesian mimicry.

The Sonoran Coral Snake and mimics are consumed less by predators and are more highly concentrated per square mile than the Garter Snake (a non-mimic species). For example, 5.2 units of the Garter Snake are consumed by weasels, hawks, and badgers. (The Garter Snake is consumed more than the hare's 4 units a day). Whereas, only 0.07 units of coral snake are consumed by predators daily. Mimicry species like the Milk Snake or Shovel-Nosed Snake, are consumed by 0.05 units per day and 0.06 units per day.

The Sonoran Coral Snake and their mimics occupy the same areas of southern Arizona as the Garter and Western snakes. Over time, the mimics have evolved independently and developed traits analogous to the Sonoran Coral Snake. The Milk Snake, Mountain King Snake, and the Shovel-nosed Snake have have developed these analogous traits to mimick aposematic scales and further avoid predators. Analogous traits are a form of convergent evolution that develop when two organisms face similar environmental pressures. In the case of the mimics, this would be predators like the weasel and hawk.

Areas occupied by the Coral Snake.

Seeing as these three snakes (Milk, King, and Shovel) live in the same area near the Coral Snake, they have adopted Batesian Mimicry. It's a protective device against predators. This makes them appear toxic and harmful, when they are really not.
