He is a hedonist who believes in living for pleasure and experiences. Basil is somewhat protective of Dorian and expresses concern that Lord Henry's influence could corrupt him.

When Dorian arrives at Basil's studio, he is struck by the painting. Lord Henry begins to manipulate Dorian's thoughts about life and beauty, planting the seeds of a more hedonistic worldview in his mind.

The chapter sets the stage for the central themes of the novel, including the relationship between art and life, and the impact of influence on one's character.

Quotes:

''I choose my friends for their good looks, my acquaintances for their good characters, and my enemies for their good intellects.''

this quote might symbolize Lord Henry's character of being vain which he himself agreed to- as to why i don't side with him. it is better to surround yourself with people with greater intelligence rather than looks because the visual narrative will only help you grow socially- not intellectually

“Then I feel, Harry, that I have given away my whole soul to some one who treats it as if it were a flower to put in his coat, a bit of decoration to charm his vanity, an ornament for a summer's day.”

this quote corresponds to an another, quite popular quote by Osho which is ''If you love a flower, don't pick it up. Basil finds it hard to comprehend how much the man he loved so much could have changed. Dorian, trying to romanticize the act of dying, asks Hallward if he may sketch a portrait of Sybil. After Dorian tricks Basil into telling the truth about how eager he was to show the portrait, it becomes clear that the painter had always been under the young man's spell and had lost that zeal as well as the man's ability to control his thoughts. Dorian explains that the idolatry is absurd and that their friendship is limited to that. It is the eve of Dorian's 38th birthday. He says he would like to talk to Dorian and that he will be visiting Paris for six months. In the library, the characters talk about the gossip that is going around London regarding Dorian. Dorian makes an effort to understand the issue from Basil, but it is obvious that he will not heed his old friend's advise. Basil surprised and frightens Dorian by expressing a desire to see into his soul because he cannot believe the allegations about him and wants to protect him. Basil trailed Dorian into a shadowy space where the painting he created is concealed.

Quotes:

'' Every gentleman is interested in his good name.''

it seems like people pay more attention towards their reputation rather than taking extra measures to actually do better in this world.. it constitutes to a shallow personality.

words:

''heaps of time''- a large quantity of it

curate- a member of the clergy engaged as assistant to a vicar, rector, or parish priest.

blasphemy- the action or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; The artist is overcome with fear as he stares in shock at his painting, which appears to be exactly like the original but with Dorian's facial features drastically altered. The protagonist narrates how the curse came to be while acknowledging the impact of his surroundings on his life. The protagonist tells the artist that it is too late for Dorian to ask Christ for forgiveness and redemption. Dorian suddenly loses control of his fury and hatred, causing him to stab Basil in the skull with a knife. The main character treats the artist like a "thing on a chair" and kills him without feeling sorrow or sadness. Dorian conceals the artist's body and possessions with the intention of burning them later; In the meantime, he goes to his servant and gives himself an alibi by saying he didn't meet anyone and that he lost the castle key and asked if anyone was seeking for him that evening. When he gets home, he makes the decision to write to Alan Campbell.

Quotes:

--

words:

mildew- There are patches of mildew on the walls. Alan, a musician and scientist, appears pale and upset that he had to see Gray after a protracted and tiresome wait. Dorian tells Alan the truth about the dead in his home, saying it was a suicide. Dorian then requests that Alan dispose of the body like it would be a research experiment, but Alan declines. When he later confesses that it was murder, Alan remains unmoved. After then, Dorian hands Alan a piece of paper with anything written on it. After reading it, Alan grants the request because he is desperate and tells the servant what equipment is required. She mentions her ex-husband in jest and states that she would like to wed Dorian. The man consumes a lot of alcohol and doesn't seem hungry throughout supper. While acknowledging that Gray's sudden state is concerning, Lord Henry insists that everything is well. Dorian's most recent romantic interest, Madame de Ferrol, who had a boyfriend, is disclosed during the talk. Dorian heads home in an attempt to cut down on pointless inquiries, and as he opens a box of jeweled ornaments, something green is revealed. The driver is reluctant to take Dorian where he is, but eventually agrees when Dorian offers extra money.

Quotes:

'' Life is a great disappointment.''

I side with this statement.

words:

incorrigible- (of a person or their behaviour) not able to be changed or reformed.

squabble- quarrel noisily over a trivial matter.

peerage- the title and rank of peer or peeress.

daresay- used to indicate that one believes something is probable.

winced- make a slight involuntary grimace or shrinking movement of the body out of pain or distress.

felicity- the ability to find appropriate expression for one's thoughts./ extreme happines

He encounters Adrian Singleton, a young man who, according to rumours, Dorian corrupted, when he enters a filthy den. A woman calls Dorian "Prince Charming" as he gets ready to leave. A sailor instantly gets up and follows Dorian outside after hearing these comments. Someone grabs Dorian from behind and holds a gun to his head. James Vane, Sibyl's brother, who has been following Dorian for years in an effort to get revenge on him, is standing in front of him. Although James is unaware of Dorian's identity, the mention of "Prince Charming" leads him to believe that the man must be the one who mistreated his sister. Dorian replies that he cannot possibly be the man who harmed Sibyl because he has the face of a twenty-year-old and the man James wants was in love with her eighteen years ago. After releasing him, James returns to the opium den. James gets told by the elderly woman that Dorian has been a regular visitor for eighteen years, and during that period, his face has never aged. Furious at having let his prey escape, James resolves to hunt him down again.

Quotes:

''to cure soul by means of the senses, and the senses by the means of the soul.''

to spend time repenting and making amends for the sins or bad things you may have done in pursuit of the things that delight the senses. After it Dorian visits the locked chamber to see his portrait. He thinks that maybe his choice to save the reputation of the innkeeper's daughter will be reflected in the painted face and hopes that his decision to make changes in his life will have affected the painting. However, Dorian notices nothing has changed when he looks at his image. In a fit of rage, he grabs a knife, which was used to kill Basil and drives it into the portrait in attempt of destroying it. Dorian`s servants hear a loud noise from upstairs. As they rush into the room, they see an unharmed, beautiful portrait of Dorian Gray and old man lying on the floor with heart pierced by a knife.
