Reading in a Foreign Language. April 2006.

This case study of a learner of French looks at whether an extensive reading program can enhance lexical knowledge. Overall, the study indicated that more vocabulary acquisition is possible from extensive reading than previous studies suggested, and that reading is "pedagogically efficient" as two activities – vocabulary acquisition and reading – occur at the same time. However, the researchers note that "there is a need to develop instruments which are more sensitive to degrees of acquisition". Partial learning of words with the use of context clues does not necessarily lead to retention of spelling, meaning, and grammatical characteristics. The measurement procedure was a one-on-one study of a 27-year-old learner of French whose mother tongue was Greek, and who also spoke fluent English as a second language. The test took place after a one-month period of extensive reading in French, covered 133 target words and included measurement procedures that were sensitive to partial knowledge of words.

This study looks at the learning experiences and results of nine participants learning Turkish on Duolingo over the course of one term. Results were moderate correlation between the amount of time spent on Duolingo and learning gains. In terms of the learning experience, there was variability in motivation to study and frustration with the instructional materials used, but overall, the gamification of language learning was viewed positively.
