Resonating Ideas

1. "Kids spend many hours reading but do they really understand what they read?"
this question really resonated with me since most of the time during majority of my English language arts class in high school, I didn't comprehend any of the materials my teacher assigned on a regular basis. I remember spending hours re-reading chapters of novels because I wasn't able to retain or make sense of any of the significant information mentioned in the book. Similarly to my situation I feel that if children aren't interested in the text they're reading, despite their ability to read the words on the page, they won't be able to construct any greater meaning from them. I think this is a relevant issue in elementary schools today and one that I could definitely run into as a future educator. Thus I think it's crucial for me to learn about some of the ways I can help promote student comprehension and help foster meaningful connections.

2. The video's emphasis on the significance of classroom environment was something else that stood out to me. Earlier in this course I found it interesting to learn that having a designated reading space helps accommodate the whole class and encourage small group discussion. This video expands on this idea by highlighting how every available inch of wall space should be used for teaching and learning. For example, throughout the classroom there were resources to help children keep track of their thinking such as having clearly labelled bins, neatly organized books and anchor charts. I think this point is really important and something I would definitely keep in mind when organizing my classroom in order to create a welcoming space that fosters learning.

3. I also really liked how the first teacher gave students the freedom to choose their own books but also guided their thinking to take into consideration important factors such as having diversity in their selection, picking ones that are within an appropriate level of difficulty, and choosing a book that was recommended to them by their peers. I totally agree that students should be given the power to choose what they want to read in order for them to be fully engaged, I also think that as a future educator its really important to take the time to get to know your students, their interests, and their capabilities. Like the teacher in this video, by knowing your students, you can make sure that you provide them with the proper help they need and help them explore their own interests.

4. Lastly, the idea to show not tell is a simple concept but quite an effective teaching approach I think the video highlights quite well. More specifically the segment with the first educator (Debbie) reinforces the benefits of modeling. By demonstrating the activity before encouraging her students to try it out on their own, she strengthen overall student understanding that resulted in the activity going smoothly and maximum student learning. As well I think it contributed to her students feeling confident about their thinking and being comfortable sharing their ideas. In my future classroom I would definitely incorporate this approach in order to similarly reinforce student understanding and foster enthusiasm.

Question
How can you foster interest in reading for those students who don't speak English?
