One of the Strategies presented in this chapter that I find to be completely fantastic is to make sure when utilizing your Smart Board, make sure your students are engaged AND interacting not engaged and reacting. For instance, if you are leading a lesson, make sure it is not only you interacting with the Smart Board. Even if the students are engaged it does not mean they are interacting. They are just watching you teach. To ensure the students are engaged and interactive supply manipulatives and incorporate what you are doing on the Smart Board by having the students do the same thing with the manipulatives. This provides the students with an opportunity to use their critical thinking skills as well as collaborate and communicate with classmates.

Something I found on my own this week while researching online graphic organizer was a wonderful and free site called mindmeister. My 2nd grade students HATE writing and constantly tell me they do not know what to write about. I had them create a pen and pencil graphic organizer to jot down all their writing ideas. They hated it and constatnly asked to go to the nightzookeeper.com center during writers workshop. My students want to do everything online! Which is understandable considering their daily lives are made up of online programs, games and interactions. So I went to my team teacher and used her orbit of ability, which is knowing almost every online educational tool, and she informed me of this online graphing site. I introduced my kiddos to it and voila! I had 23 wonderful graphic organizers! The best thing?! Even I could use it. It is wonderfully user friendly and kid-compatible. In fact, it is so easy I included a graphic organizer of chapter 5 for this discussion!
