The passage also said the sweet smell of the narrator's hand lotion attracted every mosquito. The best solution for her would be to put on the hand lotion inside then go outside.

She is distracted from everything because she is from the city so she usually does not get to see things like this. She also said "I soon forgot the bugs as we reached the to of the falls". That tells that everything just went away after she saw the falls.
