Following the webinar about volunteering I wanted to pass along a few suggestions and comments: 

 

In the US it is very important to have volunteering experience included on college and job applications. Applications to universities look at an applicant’s social life and contribution to society and that focus is growing. I do not know if this plays a role on the islands but maybe this should be discussed and promoted. My two sons ran food pantry campaigns, not only because the community needed it and they wanted to get involved, but also because they were able to include it on their applications for college and scholarships. Companies are being approached on a regular basis by different charities so instead of giving some to several organizations our company has elected to work with only one, Communities In Schools that assists children from low income households to have the things they need for school and even food on the weekends through a backpack program. Each year through an event held at the airport we manage, we hold an open house for the community raising approximately $15,000 every year. I also serve as vice-chairman of the charity and everyone on the board donates personally on a monthly basis ($60/month). My donation is tax deductible. 

 

Also, I liked one of speaker’s suggestions to have an agreement with the volunteers. Here background checks are done at most of charities and not only do you need to sign an agreement but also read the rules for the charity. Accurate financial reporting is also very important in order for an organization to keep receiving funding.
