Homework Policy for Fourth Grade (Bekah, Molly, Brittany)

Students should be able to complete their homework on their own, with little to no help from their guardian. Students will be given homework 3-4 times a week. Projects and assignments will be thoughtfully spaced out, in order to not overwhelm students. Homework will not be graded, and students that do not complete it will not receive a consequence. Students that attempt their assignment and turn it in on time will receive a punch on their punchcard. For every ten punches, they will receive a desk pet. On average, assignments should take 20-25 minutes per night. If students are taking much longer than this, or are becoming frustrated, the guardian can mark the assignment with a star, indicating that the student was struggling with this assignment. If a student is completing their homework without a guardian present, they can star their own paper, and write a note to the teacher explaining why. The teacher will go over the homework the next day, and will make sure to note which students had stars, and see if they have any specific questions or concerns.

Homework is most successful for students when they are able to complete it on their own. It should be challenging, but not so hard that they need outside support in order to complete it. Additionally, there is no direct positive correlation between the time students in elementary school spend doing homework, and their test scores. The emphasis should be on the quality of work they are doing, as opposed to the quantity. By only offering rewards instead of consequences, it will increase intrinsic motivation for students and keep a positive outlook towards homework.

- Students will be given homework 1-3 times a week and are should to be able to complete these assignments on their own. Assignments will be differentiated based on their ability level, rather than all students receiving the same homework, but we do encourage students to ask for help if needed, but the goal is that they can complete homework independently.
- Teacher will complete at least one problem of the homework with students so that they know exactly what they will be doing for homework.
- Homework will be reviewed but is not "graded" on a scale but rather graded for completion/attempt to complete and students should make note (a star or circle a problem) where/if they struggled. Homework is meant to be meaningful to the content we are learning and will be practice rather than new material or more difficult content.

- Margolis: designing homework to match struggling learners independent levels
- Mangione: homework should not be graded, more about completion and attempting rather than right or wrong
- Cooper: too much homework/ too many hours shows no correlational effect on improvement. AKA more homework does not mean more improvement

Students should be able to easily complete the homework assignments on their own and the questions will be made up based on the lesson that was modeled in class. If I feel the students are able to and ready to complete the homework, it will be assigned and I will tell them exactly what is expected and how long it should be taking them. It will be a short assignment that is helping them to practice their own understandings of the material. I will encourage them to try their best and will remind them that it is okay to make mistakes because it is just “practice” and will be reviewed in class the next day. The homework will not be graded and is not meant to be stress provoking. This policy is meant to enable students to form a growth-mindset and will allow them to feel more comfortable with taking risks and answering questions on their assignments to the best of their ability. I am more focused on their effort rather than their correctness.

In our third grade classroom, we do not feel as though homework should be a major stressor, however it is more so a way for the teacher to formatively assess the class’ general understanding of the topic. Everyday we will pencil in 5-10 minutes to explain the homework. The teacher will explain how the homework should be done, how long will take, and how it will be collected. By doing this the students will know what is expected of them and it will alleviate stress. We will not be grading the homework based off correct answers but instead the effort and completion. We believe that the quality of work is more important than the quantity of work the student got correct. Students avoid doing homework because of fear they will receive a bad grade, and we do not want this fear in our classroom!

At most, one homework assignment will be assigned each day (this is dependent on how much work gets done during the day).

Before each homework assignment is given out, it will be reviewed with the class to clarify any questions or concerns.

Students should be able to complete homework by themselves with limited help from a parent or friend.

If a student is struggling or unable to complete an assignment, there will be no repercussions.

After the morning meeting everyday, we will review the homework and go over any questions the class has.

Grading of the homework will be flexible and depend on how much effort was put into the assignment instead of a letter/number grade.

Homework completion will be kept track of on a chart with stickers. The class will be eligible for rewards based on their progress.

Homework will be linked to a student's goals. Students will receive helpful feedback about their performance each week.

WHY~ We chose the following policies because the common goal is to provide students with a sense of independence, and accomplishment. Having assigned tasks will also give the children responsibility and an opportunity to enforce their learning (Is Homework Working). Confusion will be avoided by assigning one homework assignment at a time and asking/answering questions every day (Resolving Struggling Learners Homework Difficulties).

Homework will be assigned on Mondays for the week. There will be no work assigned for Friday-Sunday. Students are encouraged to complete independent reading during the weekend.

Students are expected to complete the assigned work, with an honest attempt, the week it is due. Students who do so will be given full credit.

Teacher:
-	Won’t assign more than 30 minutes of homework
-	Homework assigned will be relevant and reinforce the learning that was done in class
-	Putting work from previous day in the designated spot in the classroom for students who were absent
- Differentiate assignments as needed

Student:
-	Attempt your homework independently, and ask for help if you get stuck.
-	Spend at least 30 minutes, of focused work, to complete the assignment
-	Take home all required materials (textbooks, worksheets, computer, etc)
-	Bring homework back to school when it is due
-	Getting any work that was missed when absent

Parent:
-	Help your student find a quiet study environment to complete their work.
-	Write a note to the teacher if your student is struggling/spending more than 30 minutes working

Time Allocation - According to the literature, short practice assignments improve performance in class and on tests. Studies have discovered that there is no relationship between time spent on homework and achievement. This information and the fact that 8-9 year old students have an attention span that ranges from 15-30 minutes is why the time allocation was decided.
Late Policy - homework can be stressful for struggling students. For this reason, credit will be given based on completion and effort, not accuracy.
