It is no doubt that knowledge complexity has helped healthcare providers to develop critical thinking in providing care for patients because this complex knowledge drives them to have good reasoning wherein they are aware of how and what essential data they will gather from the patients with the help of technological advancements. Certainly, healthcare providers must have in-depth knowledge and interpretation in order to provide appropriate treatment and management for patients. 

 

However, such measures need to be incorporated such as this “Knowledge Complexity Archetype” that was discussed in the module. Data, information, knowledge, and wisdom are considered the main concepts of knowledge, but to go from information to wisdom, the stated archetype has to be considered. This archetype is helpful especially in the nursing practice because a nurse could have an outstanding performance with his/her interventions if (1) he/she will be able to comprehend the meaning of what he/she is doing and its correlation with one another thereby promoting effectiveness; (2) he/she knows how to self-organize or understand the patterns thereby seeing the bigger picture of the patient’s condition, which will help in long-term planning; and (3) he/she will explore all the opportunities and his/her skills and intentions thereby finding out the purpose of what he/she is doing in the healthcare industry—especially for the patients.

We are currently living in the Information Age in which there is an abundance of information available to us generally through network platforms such as those found on the internet. However, to properly utilize this wealth of information to solve a particular problem or make a decision, we must be information literate, that is having the ability to recognize, locate, evaluate, use, and communicate information effectively. Nurses are knowledge workers as they gather data when assessing and monitoring the health of their patients, exchange service requests to and receive results from other departments in the hospital, receive and review admission data and discharge summaries, and use information on the latest evidence-based clinical guidelines and protocols to guide their interventions and provide quality care. That being said, it is vital for nurses to be information literate to critically evaluate the pertinent data they gather and the information they obtain. Doing so will enable them to  provide safe and accurate information to other members of the health care team, their patients, and their patients’ families.

Consequently, I also realized the importance to access the needed information efficiently and effectively. This prevents us from being too overwhelmed with the information that we currently have. This also permits us to establish our priorities and choose within the information that we have what we shall omit and include in delivering our care to our patients. 

With that said, I also think that we need to use the information that we have effectively to accomplish a specific purpose. Since standards and protocols are established within the hospital setting, it is critical and vital that we gatekeep any information that we have especially if that information will hamper and affect our clients negatively. We must prevent any untoward situation once this information is disclosed.

To be able to keep up with advancements, I believe that being innovative and creative is a must for all healthcare providers, they must at least implement the use of EHR/ electronic health record which is where patient’s information are stored and use to be able to intervene care. Doctors can also use CPOE/ computerized physician order entry, with this, they can type the medications, advices, diagnosis, and results, etc. to avoid miscommunication with the patient, nurses, and other healthcare team. Philippines’ healthcare settings faces so much struggle but, still healthcare providers must find a way on how to utilize the nursing informatics into practice because besides lessening the workload of nurses, doctors, etc. this is also to ensure patient safety.

As my interest in this topic grew, I discovered that there are five major components to information literacy: identify, find, evaluate, apply, and acknowledge. To be an information literate person, one must first identify what type of information one requires, then locate it in appropriate and reliable resources or places, after which evaluate the sources of information to determine whether they are reliable or not, then apply information effectively to achieve a specific goal and objective, and finally, acknowledge the information one used to avoid plagiarism and copyright infringement.

Being information literate is critical in the nursing profession because it enhances the nurse's ability to use the current best available research literature in the conduct of evidence-based practices (EBP), resulting in improved care for the best patient health outcomes. By utilizing the five major components of information literacy, one nurse can provide effective, efficient, and holistic care by:

(1): Becoming aware of the need for information critical to the patient's care plan

(2): Creating a searchable question or statement, followed by planning and carrying out the search.

(3): Retrieving only the necessary information based on the patient's condition.

(4): Using a care plan to organize, synthesize, apply, and evaluate knowledge and information.

(5): Acknowledging evidence-based practice and information gained and used for patient care.

My key takeaway from this module is that information literacy is crucial to improving the nurse's capacity to conduct evidence-based practice using the most recent, top-quality research material in order to improve nursing-sensitive patient outcomes. Information literacy refers to a set of skills that make it possible for someone to find, analyze, and use information. The five elements of information literacy are finding, evaluating, applying, and acknowledging sources of information. The information-literate nurse uses information well to fulfill a specified objective. The nurse who is knowledgeable about information critically assesses the sources and information that has been obtained before deciding whether to change the original question, look for other sources, or create a new research method.

Literacy is a right, not a privilege. Applying informatics literacy in the practice of nursing encompasses the basic foundations of nursing on care. Nurses have the right to be literate in nursing informatics because it alleviates problems on administration, management, research and alike as it enables these people to stand independently even with technologies present. Applying this concept on the nursing practice would use education to enhance and expand the current knowledge of nurses as it would help in developing experiences in the work field with competent flow and proficient health teaching.

The incorporation of technology in the nursing profession has been gradual; it took a long time and tedious research to be able to create Health Systems which could be effectively used in the nursing practice. Through this module, I was able to understand that technology wasn’t the only thing that was changing, through time nurses also evolved. Of course, applying these new technologies in the hospital setting also created new challenges, and nurses have to look for new ways to overcome these issues continuously, this shows how nurses and those involved in Nursing Informatics are dynamically affecting the healthcare system. One great example is shown through the concept of Informatics Literacy; Because new technologies were introduced, nurses needed to adapt and broaden their knowledge and informatics literacy to be able to properly acquire, process, generate, and disseminate knowledge. But being information literate extends outside the operation of the Health Informatic Systems, it can also affect how you manage and extend health teaching to your patient. If you can effectively evaluate and assess the information you have, no matter what the source of the data is (medical websites, online videos, news outlets, blogs, etc.), you can give better care to your patients.
