From discussion seems there are some common issues:

lack of capacity - not enough people
individuals and groups working in isolation - lack of cross-disciplinary connectivity
lack of awareness - mechanisms for connecting with others who might be able to help
wide range of skills - but need to develop in some areas where funders have interest

We will often lack capacity for quantitative methodology when looking at funding opportunities - the team has more work than it can handle. Don't know where to look or who to go to for support outside the centre - other than a very small group of key contacts

While I have the expertise to collect, generate and analyse quantitative data on the physical environment (Daylight, thermal, ventilation, acoustic environment), I struggle to find experts in quantitative methods on Human Factor (Health, wellbeing, physical activity). Also, need to know who can deal with interdisciplinary big data analysis.
No, we also randomly search people and predict the expertise and find out via personal 1-2-1 meeting.

Similar here- we tend to rely on people that we already know and I was unaware of the SHU-wide research expertise database- although having had a quick look, this must need updating as well / needs common language / glossary of search terms to use

There needs to be a mechanism to prompt (and help) staff to update their expertise, as this will grow over time
