Hey! The name is Sharif. My passion is in the health industry doing Muscle Therapy and Personal Training, but my secret passion is in food. I enjoy cooking, working out, exploring something new in life whether it be a new location, new experience or even learning something new. Lately my common practice is to do something outside my box of comfort and expand myself. I'm taking the leap of faith as a 28 year old health practitioner and entering a new field of business to start something bigger then what I imagined before. I live by the motto that " Life is to short to get stuck with something comfortable, I prefer the challenge of being uncomfortable with new progressive experiences"

Have you ever thought that our growth in life follows the same cycles that a tree does throughout the year? All living organisms will go through the same growth but with different rituals leading us. Just like in the fall where a tree will shed its leaves in order to prepare itself for a pivotal transition in life. I have gone through a moment in life where I was introduced to religion by my father. This was the first moment where rituals were introduced to my life and I didn’t realize it at the time but this would be a defining moment of who I will become in the future. I was eventually stripped of my freedom of choice as my nurturing world would demand me to change similar to how the weather would demand of a tree.

After I attempted to quit religion I realized that wouldn’t be an option and I would slowly start to develop the need for my own freedom and space. So I ran away to video gaming where it was my own world that I could control every action. A false sense of control in my life, but this laid the foundation of my desire for independence. A foothold in the world similar to how a tree would focus its energy towards growing roots into the ground as it endured what nature had to throw at it.

Spring is probably the most beautiful time of the year; not just because all the trees end up blooming with new branches, leaves and flowers. But it’s the beauty that every person naturally realizes after the harshness of winter that there needs to be dramatic change in our lives where we too see the most growth in ourselves. This development reminds me of an article that talked about how after the pandemic we can still see the memory of tape residue the was left behind on the ground as a constant reminder of the hard times and how we moved forward in our progression in life that the pandemic has left its mark on the world and changed it forever.

Summer is the peak of our growth where we gained mastery in something and now it is time to start new trees of growth that will go through their own hardships and lessons in life. This is where a tree turns its flowers into fruit that bear seeds of new pathways of life, to us it’s a new plethora of rituals to experience and learn from. To become in tune with nature is for us to understand what season we are currently in and how we can capitalize our growth like a tree.

Nurturing Nature

What does it mean to befriend a tree? Is it the same as befriending a peer, in which you share stories, laugh, relate and grow? I do not believe it is that simple. To befriend someone is to find commonalities, ways in which you mutually benefit each other, help each other grow, and treat each other with respect. Nature is an essential aspect of life that needs to be "befriended" like you would a peer- preserved and treated with respect. It is beneficial for humans to befriend nature to keep the land healthy, to keep themselves healthy, and to understand social interactions between species further.
A huge factor of what we as people should be doing is preserving nature before we wipe it off all of our maps. We might feel like we are above having nature, but we rely on it more than we can possibly imagine. The bay area is a prime example of this change in our natural habitat being pushed to the point of irreversible change where wildlife is pushed to places where they have no where to go and have to choose to parish or scavenge through our towns and cities to survive. Our plant life has also changed from a rich variety of ecosystems, down to a small handful of less diverse plants that do not offer a sustainable habitat for wild animals. Even the land has changed from a wet marsh land to a dry grassy plain for the majority of the year.
Nature isn't as far away as we presume it to be since we ourselves are a part of that nature. Maintaining ones health is crucial, both with our minds and bodies. But with our need for self preservation comes the destruction of our natural lands as we pave our hills making trails for the communities to hike through. Our wildlife neighbors suffer from us taking away their homes.
Our social interactions with species are an important aspect of life that I feel like we have ignored for a long time for our own benefits. Or in Grizzly man, Timothy Treadwell argued that we shouldn't maintain fear of bears if we could instead learn to interact and understand their social language. Timothy Treadwell quotes " "They work together and get really powerful… I have now proven myself as being able to hold my ground and therefore earning their respect." Understanding the laws of nature and how animals interact with each other can help us understand social dynamics in our own species. Taken out of context, you could directly apply this to protestors attempting to have their voice heard by politicians.
So, what does it mean to befriend a tree? To me, "befriending a tree" is to respect and nurture nature. To return to our roots and help to restore our homeland that has been destroyed. It means immersing ourselves in nature for the benefits of our health and happiness. Lastly, it is to understand the dynamics of other species, how they interact, using that knowledge to our advantage in our lives. It is crucial for humanity to befriend nature to keep wildlife blooming, maintain our own health, and educate us in social interactions in society.

The effects of muscular pain in today's society

It has become common today to dismiss our body’s signals of pain and discomfort. Have you ever had a day where you said or heard someone say the phrases “God, my back is killing me” or “I woke up with a stiff neck today”. These are some of phrases I hear on a day to day basis as a trigger point therapist and personal trainer. There is an ever growing problem that we aren’t addressing properly that the population is only just beginning to see the results of our evolution of dependency on technology, trends and expectations from today’s society. It is critical that we understand why muscular pain is more common, how muscular pain develops and ; if we don't, we will see an increase of people having nerve pains and surgeries at an earlier age.
We are taught many things in life, big and small lessons that differ from person to person. But those unfamiliar with this thought may be interested to know that it basically boils down to be successful; We must work, make money, and go make a life for ourselves. In a study by Panida Hanphitakphong, she advocates how being on a phone for 20 minutes at a time playing games can affect the bodies of children from 10-18 years old. She found that just by being on the phone for as little as 20 minutes did alter the angle of the kid’s neck and shoulder posture on an average 5 degrees along with reports of neck discomfort. This is a small difference, but in comparison to the hours that other individuals spend looking at their phones, computers, tv, etc. it adds up quickly.

According to both my findings and Dr. Hanphitakphong, when we look down at smartphones, we go through the actions of tilting the head down with the contraction of muscles in the front of the neck and rolling our shoulders forward through flexing the chest muscles to allow the hands to come together to perform the action of hold the phone out in front of the body for efficient use.

The simplest solution to pain is addressing the problems from the source at an early age. Educating everyone that experiences these pains and problems exists and making this a top priority of teachers educating our children in P.E. during grade school since society’s demand for usage of social media increases and using tech to aid us in a task. We need to be just as progressive advancing our knowledge of self care and stop running away from the problem. That's not the kind of pain and problems we are dealing with and we have the resources to find out this knowledge today. It all starts today with us taking action towards a better us.

Tell the machine goodnight is a unique book that takes a mix of delivery of the narration from going between first person and third person. The main premise is about how people used this computer that they called "the Machine" and put a sliver of DNA in to get a contentment plan for the day to find personal happiness. Overall, I enjoyed the story and how this machine would fit in modern society. But the lack of a message to take away after reading the book makes me feel like I wasted my time reading it all together.
