Not necessarily a subculture but the style of shoulder pads are very time specific and as someone who loves the shape manipulation they give I actually think it’s so accurate that the shoulders often were more padded that a quarterbacks. (The shoulder pads in the image are actually very minor but if you look at Dynasty and Joan Collins’ signature looks, the shoulder pads are extravagant)

This is a caricature satire of Coco Chanel and her designs. I think it is overall quite an unfair portrayal of body types, especially when it is well know she took many steps throughout her life to maintain the most athletic figure as possible. However, the body type of both people emphasise the truthfully baggy and relaxed structure Chanel considered luxury. The humour for me comes from the raggedy appearance of the figures and their clothes, which don’t appear to be high fashion by modern standards, so it almost attacks Chanel’s rigid opinion that luxury should be comfortable. (She famously disparaged Dior’s New Look for being horribly constraining to women)

The humour plays on typical ‘expectation vs reality’ memes, but within the context of how underwhelming Alexander McQueen’s most recent runway show was. It relies on a certain knowledge of McQueen’s brand ethos and the previous collections he presented to truly grasp how lacklustre the AW 2024 collection was.

It really says that what we expect from the brand is the image on the left, but what we got was the image on the right.

The meme is exemplified by having the comparison of one of his most iconic Haute Couture looks next to the basic mould dress on the right.

And then Pope Francis has been edited as the poster of the tweet, just to comedically show that even the Pope would be annoyed at how basic the runways were.
