I have only been a certified teacher since May of 2020. Most of my student teaching was completed remotely. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences and learning from others how they dealt with online teaching. In the article, What Can We Learn from Covid-Era Instruction by John Hattie, my biggest takeaway is that students who were taught "self regulation, engaged in gradual release of teacher responsibility, and focused on both content and deep learning had better outcomes (Hattie, 2021). I want to focus on that philosophy, and bring it into my classroom.

I predict this course will be valuable in providing a new way to think about technology use in the classroom. I agree with the philosophy described in the Distance Learning Playbook which states that, “Technology use is the means and starting point, not the core of teaching.” Sometimes it feels as though technology in education is a gimmick rather than a tool, such as smart boards being the classroom of the future. As we enter a digital world where remote teaching may become an expectation or requirement, I believe this course will provide valuable insight into how to navigate this future.

My intentions in this course are to develop my remote teaching skills while at the same time focusing on how to best reach students for whom remote learning is difficult. Many of my students struggle with reading and writing proficiencies, and the act of “school” is difficult. When remote learning puts more emphasis on individual students knowing themselves, it can lead to success stories and tragedies. My goal during this course will be to consider how to help guide students through a screen who I would usually be with in a classroom.

During distance learning, I felt myself sliding into a highly teacher-centered kind of instruction, and I didn't like it. During my previous 13 years as a teacher, I had become more and more learner-centered, and loved it. It was both more successful and less taxing. I deeply appreciate the characterization of remote teaching during COVID as "crisis teaching." I predict that this course will be valuable to me as a way to get back to my core pedagogical practices of focusing on the learner, transferable skills, and deep thinking. I aim to use the learning from this course to reflect on the tech tools and platforms that I experimented with in the last year and a half, and plan to use them more intentionally and effectively in the future, in a way that is more in line with sound teaching practices rather than desperation.

For example, I have only used padlet a handful of times in my classroom, but this is an extremely useful tool (especially with older learners). This reserach will still be in its infancy, but more will be published every couple of weeks.

When I saw this course come across my computer I thought now that looks like it would have been great a year ago! Once I had my chuckle I investigated it further and knew I wanted to take it to learn more of what other educators had done and how to truly integrate the technology into the classroom with real purpose not just a video here or there for a movement break. Also working with kindergarteners makes you very reliant upon the adults in your students life and how engaged they are in their learning, regular classroom issue kicked up a notch.
2 What are your intentions/goals for learning in this course?
A goal would be to develop a repertoire of ways to use technology/virtual learning that I can have at the ready to pull out when needed . Also be proactive in getting families engaged virtually so when we have a remote day it is truly seamless and as stress-free for all parties. I hope that I can discover ways to engage all the students virtually just like in person we have teach to many learning styles I'm sure this holds true for virtual learning.

I know growth requires honest reflection and I was just not ready for that, it seemed like too large a task. I predict this course will be valuable in facilitating my reflection and gaining insight from other educators. It will be helpful to connect with others and discover what did and did not work for them and discuss ways to make improvements in the future.

What are your intentions/goals for your learning in this course?

My students struggle with self-regulation and this year added a new layer of difficulty for them. I hope to find ways to integrate elements of virtual learning into the new school year. I would also like to learn more about instructional approaches others used over the year that they felt were effective and learn from their experiences.

This course will be valuable in a variety of ways. Even from the first reading and supplemental video, I am learning ways of thinking about online learning and I have language for describing it and for organizing it. For example, thinking about online teaching as a new career that -of course- needs adjustment time. Things like that that allow us to forgive our mistakes and time table for adapting are helpful.
Subsequent learning that I welcome includes gaining knowledge and experience with tools. I have used Padlet but don't have a lot of experience with Canva and I am looking forward to it!
My intentions/goals are to have a better plan for building the online community and helping others adjust to the format. I'll be able to speak to others in a more informed way about setting boundaries for successful teaching and learning at home and that routines are beneficial both in F2F and online format. I think a new end-of-the-day routine will help me "leave work at work" regardless of location:)!

1) How do you predict this course might be valuable to you?

I am always seeking out ways to grow both as an educator and as an adult learner. I believe that as educators we need to walk the walk. We need to show our students we value education and by taking on opportunities to learn and become more confident users of technology, we can do this. We can also excite our students with using things they will be able to use outside of the classroom in college or on the job too.

2) What are your intentions/goals for learning in this course?

My intentions for this time is for reflection--to be honest with myself and my practice. To really dive in deep about what worked well during this distance learning time period. I do not want to throw everything out and start fresh in this upcoming school and return back to the status quo--that would be a disservice in my opinion. I want to take this time to think about what went well--and what did not go well--so I can incorporate some of these best practices with intention. I also hope by doing this reflection now I gain back some of that work life balance that I lost during the 20/21 school year--I am sure I am not the only one that did. By setting this intention now, I hope I can make it a priority next year.

This course will encourage me to address remote learning (work on building the plane) when I have some time and space to think about it (while not flying the plane). I was from March 2020 until June 2021 to be in the middle of remote and/or hybrid learning. This summer feels like the first time I've been (mostly) disconnected enough to actually be able to look at what happened over those sixteen months and reflect on remote learning with clear(er) eyes. It simply can't wait until I back in the middle of it all - and this course offers the framework for that reflection and further learning.
2. What are your intentions/goals for your learning in this course?
I would like to refine and revise what I've been doing - and learn more about what is available now that I/we all are hopefully a bit wiser.
In assignment #2 I alluded to the concept of perspective - part of what I'm interested in doing during this course is to assume the viewpoint/posture of my students. What are the roadblocks to learning in this environment and how can I confront them intentionally? What can I do to see what I have already been doing with this platform and what I propose to do through their perspective and then respond effectively/appropriately.

1. How do you predict this course might be valuable to you?
I believe this course will help me to modify my teaching practices to incorporate more technology in my sessions with students so that I can easily move between face to face groups and remote groups more effectively.
2. What are your intentions/goals for your learning in this course?
My goal is to complete assignments on time in the future! I hope to learn more about remote/online teaching as well as teaching strategies in general. I am not a "teacher" but a speech and language professional working in a school setting.
