LO1- The second key artist that I will discuss is John Lennon. I will focus on his song 'Imagine' for the purpose of this task. The musical aspects of this song are very simplistic. The instrumentation in this song only includes vocals, piano, drum kits, bass and strings. Although there is a full set up, the arrangement of the instruments makes it seem as though there are hardly any instruments used. The simplicity of the music makes it very easy for the listener to hear and focus on the lyrics, which have significant meaning. John took inspiration from a few poems from the book 'Grapefruit', written by Yoko Ono, to write the lyrics for 'Imagine'. The whole concept of the song is to imagine a world without any religion, country division or politics. Lennon was a believer in the idea that global harmony was accessible to humankind if we were to reject any kind of social/ political control. There were many issues going on in the world around the time that this song was written, such as the troubles in Northern Ireland and protests against the 'Industrial Relations Act' in London, so it is likely that Lennon took inspiration from events such as these when writing 'Imagine'. He wrote the song in one short writing session, one morning in 1971. He wrote the melody, chord structure and almost all the lyrics at this time. The song is a soft rock piano ballad, written in the key of C major.

LO2- The characteristics of soft rock music that this song has, are things like the use of acoustic instruments, slow-mid tempo, simple melodies and lush production. Soft- Rock is a sub-genre of popular music that originated in the 70s in California with bands such as Fleetwood Mac. The lush production comes from the fact that there is use of strings. Although there are not a large group of instruments used in this song, the production definitely gives it it's full sound.
This song was written and recorded in England, however it was well received globally. Rolling Stone called it 'the greatest musical gift to the world'. Having such a famous music magazine say something so positive about the song could only have helped it's sales. This song has received many awards such as the Grammy Hall of Fame Award, the second biggest single of all time in the Guinness World Records and it was rated number 3 in The 500 Greatest Songs of all time by Rolling Stone.
The relationship between the music and the audience is very strong with this song because of how significant the words are and how relevant it was for that time. John Lennon had already gotten a large fanbase and name for himself by being in The Beatles but it is songs like 'Imagine' that spurred on his solo career.
