Over 23,000 Afghans have entered Australia since 2013 in order to flee the Taliban's insurgency and eventual control of the nation. Although they are experiencing the same crises in their own nation, Australia has treated them quite differently. With over 70,000 Afghan Australians, most of whom are Muslims, contributing to many facets of society, Afghanistan continues to be an important source of migrants to Australia today (Refugee Council of Australia, 2022). Common health issues in Afghan refugees in Australia include intestinal parasites, Hepatitis B virus, and latent tuberculosis infection, as per the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide. (Health Issues of Refugees, 2020).

Intestinal Parasites:
Based on criteria including origin and availability to treatment, the prevalence of pathogenic stools parasites among refugees varies, with rates ranging from 15% to 40% with Giardia being the most prevalent. The one treatment available for refugees is recommended stool microscopy if symptoms were present. One stool sample will detect 90% of parasites.

Hepatitis B:
An estimated 220,000 Australians have chronic hepatitis B, although a greater frequency among immigrants causes over 50% of cases to go untreated. High rates of hepatitis B among Sub-Saharan African refugees in Melbourne emphasize the need for improved screening and education. Refugees with HBV should have a management plan, including clinical reviews, LFTs every 6 months, and HBV viral load tests every 12 months.

Latent tuberculosis infection:
The National TB Advisory Committee in Australia encourages thorough testing and treatment, especially for immigrants from nations with a high incidence of TB, in order to stop the spread of the disease, reduce prevalence, and save lives. Early diagnosis is essential since immigrants frequently have latent TB, which has a 5-year activation rate of 5-10%. Due to different LTBI rates among refugee groups, specialized screening and management are essential.

(Australian Red Cross, 2022),
(Australian Refugee Health» Primary Care for People of Refugee Backgrounds, n.d.)
