FEBRUARY 11, 2019 - By looking at photos on pinterest I came up with the idea of carving the phases of the moons into the pages of a book. The first thing I pictured was the moon phases layered on top of each other. I wanted them to be built on top of each other so when I moved the page it would continue on and just keep adding to each other.

FEBRUARY 14, 2019 - I sketched two different ideas out on paper to see what would work best for me. I also separated the book I chose into equal amounts of paper that way I can begin to draw out each phase on the sections. I think I might make templates of the moon to help me cut them out a little better instead of drawing them straight on and free handing them. I'm thinking of doing something where each phase builds off of each other and they're all connected somehow.

FEBRUARY 18, 2019 - I saw a picture on pinterest of a landscape and I think it looked super cool, so I think instead of the phases of the moon I might choose to do one scene in the entirety of the book. I would use the back of the book for the background, the middle for the middleground, and the first few pages for the foreground. I think I want to create a scene of the sun rising over a mountain or something in that nature. Also, the edges of my book look like they were previously gold and I think I want to repaint them to make them sparkly and shiny.

MARCH 15, 2019 - In order to add texture to the mountains to not have them completely flat, I want to use modeling paste to add some texture. It would be thin, small strokes just to add something to the mountains.

UNDERSTANDING THE ART WORLD

FEBRUARY 14, 2019 - I looked on pinterest to see what has been done by others. By looking at the different photos and art, I decided that I wanted to carve something out of the book. I chose this because many of the pieces on pinterest were either sculptures or carvings. I am not too fond of making sculptures so I didn't want to do that. I wanted to do something I would feel confident about accomplishing.

FEBRUARY 18, 2019 - I continued to look on pinterest to see the phases of the moon. I also looked at what other people in the class were doing just to see what else could be done with the materials..

FEBRUARY 27, 2019 - I discussed with others in order to get ideas on how to carve/layer my different object to create one scene. Hannah told me that I need to cut around the objects & then redraw them on. I agreed because I think this is the best way to accomplish what I want to do. Also, I needed to know what medium to use for adding color. Chelsey suggested that I use watercolor & I think that would be my best bet. However, Chelsey then came up with the idea of using the pictures within the book for the color. So when my mountain is cut out, it is made of the pictures instead of painting. I think that this could work and I plan on using this idea.

MARCH 7, 2019 - I wasn't sure how I would fix my rough pages at first, but I saw Marissa using sandpaper. Sandpaper worked really well for her to smooth her pages. I'm not quite sure it will work the exact same way, however I think it will be good to try.

I want to practice to get an idea of how it will work. I don't want to go in to my final piece not knowing how the carving will work or what to do.
MARCH 11, 2019 - After finishing carving all of the different parts, I decided to practice mixing watercolors. Since I don't really ever work with the medium, I wanted to practice mixing and getting my colors or ideas of my colors ready for the next class when I begin to add color.

FEBRUARY 27, 2019 - I began to carve the daisy’s and I found it to be a little hard to get it all the way through the entire amount of pages I had assigned for the section. However, I have to keep going otherwise my idea will not follow through. In order to successfully carve the daisy's I began to do tinier sections at a time.

MARCH 1, 2019 - The pages ripping so easily makes me want to give up and change my idea completely but it's to late to start over. In order to create the border I need the pages to stay together, but if they do rip I'm going to use gesso or mod podge to hold them together.

MARCH 19, 2019 - The flowers were very hard to cut out because I used the template so I couldn’t really see where lines were. It ended up detaching the pages from the actual book. Instead of using the template I drew them directly on the page. I think this will be much easier to cut them out because I can see where I’m cutting much better.

MARCH 29, 2019 - Once again, I wanted to completely ignore the flowers. However, I did come up with the idea of cutting the flowers out of mixed media paper and gluing them in. I liked this idea more than carving because they would actually stay in tact better. Also, it helps the flowers pop up and they're not completely glued down which adds almost a 3-d effect to the piece.

I think the template will help guide the exacto knife in the way I want it to go exactly rather than just free handing it.

MARCH 7, 2019 - Although I talked about wanting to smooth out my paper from the cutting, I think that having the rough edges on the mountains adds to the mountain affect. I like that it is rough like an actual mountain since mountains are not smooth.

MARCH 15, 2019 - I began to add color to the piece such as oranges and purples. I wanted the mountains to be purple because I thought it would look good with the sun, but also I didn't want to have gray in the piece. The purple has a grayish tint to them to add to the mountain affect. I also want to add some texture to the mountain. I am thinking about using modeling paste so that way you can actually see and feel the texture.

FEBRUARY 27, 2019 - Something that I've found complicated is the pages seem to rip easily. Since the book is older, the pages rip super easily and I find it difficult to keep the pages together where I want them. In order to fix the ripped pages I think I could use matte modpodge and put them back together. However, the rips at the top of the page made me realize that I like the piece without a border around it anyway.

MARCH 5, 2019 - Although I was planning on using the templates, they didn't quite work out because I couldn't really see what was going on while I was carving. If I was used a thinner, more transparent paper, I think it would have worked really well. However, it just didn't work. Instead I ended up drawing where I wanted to carve the shapes out and going off of what I drew instead.

MARCH 7, 2019 - Something that I’ve started to notice is the roughness of the pages where I’ve cut out. I think it may be the way the exacto knife cut through the pages because in some areas it is smooth. I’m not sure how I’m going to fix it, but I’m thinking I could possibly use sandpaper. If I used sandpaper I think it would work well to smooth them out. I also saw that Marissa used sandpaper to make her pages smoother after she drilled through the book.

MARCH 15, 2019 - When I was using watercolor and inkwash, the inkwash was very faint. To add more pigment to the colors I added a bit of watercolor. However, for the mountains I wanted them to have more pigment so I just used watercolor and less water.

MARCH 19, 2019 - I realized that cutting the pages with scissors helps smooth out the edges of the pages because it’s not going through and dragging the pages, which is causing them to be rough.

FEBRUARY 18, 2019 - I think that I want to use watercolor or an ink wash to add color to the scene I will be creating. I have only ever used ink wash once and I liked using it. I want to use both of these mediums because I've never really worked with either of them before and I want to see what it's like. I also never really have ideas for projects that I can use watercolor/ink wash for. I mainly always go to acrylic and I want to try out a different medium. Also, I don't want to use something heavy, like acrylic, where I wouldn't see any of the words on the pages. I want to show the pages of the book because I think it adds something to the piece. If there weren't words it would be like regular paper and nothing really different or unique.

Overall, I am happy with my final piece. One of my favorite aspects of the piece is something I actually didn't try to do. It almost looks like the couple on the left page is looking off into the distance at the sunset. That wasn't my plan at first, but I decided to incorporate it into the project by leaving it there. I did plan on taking that page away, but I decided to keep it. I also like the color scheme I decided to go with. I like the purples and oranges together. One thing I do wish I did differently with the colors is the purple on the mountains. I like the color however, it is shiny and I wish I didn't use the shiny watercolor. I think it would look much better with plain, matte purple. I also like the rough edges around the mountain because it adds to the roughness. However, I wish it would have been easier to smooth the edges of the sun and grass area. I wish from the start I used scissors to cut out the shapes and not the exacto knife because then it would have been much smoother. There is a section of the mountain where I used scissors and it was much smoother. Although, I tried to use sandpaper, it did help but not as smooth as I would like it to be. Something else I wish I did differently is the edges of the paper at the spine. They're very uneven and it looks messy. If I were to do the project again, I would try to cut them all evenly with scissors or I would incorporate the edges into the piece. I like how I did the flowers because it adds some dimension to the piece rather than just having everything cut directly out of the book. I also think it works better with them being cut out of white paper since they're daisy's. If I carved them out of the book, I think it would have blended in. Since I was using watercolor, I wouldn't really be able to get the white I wanted. I wanted the daisy's to pop out and contrast against the piece. I also wish I applied the modeling paste thinner and in a different way because I just don't like the way it looks. I don't like the way it looks because I think it take away from the piece. I think maybe I should have drawn on the details with a dark purple or black sharpie.
