After reading the course information and viewing the course media content I remain thankfully unchanged. I spent much of my time at my liberal arts college working within feminist studies and learning about women's rights movements and the notions therein. I am also a woman so therefore I am well aware of the inequalities that still exist. Growing up as an athlete I relate to this personally because I was made to feel less feminine and I was made to dislike my muscular figure because it went against my gender norm. Also, growing up with a brother who identifies as homosexual I became aware of how boys struggle with gender roles as well. It is not fair to deem a male less masculine because of his sexual orientation. My brother is the epitome of a good strong man. I am well aware of the present problems with gender roles.
However, I now appreciate that I can think more about how gender roles affect children. The advertisements on children's networks are especially disturbing to me. I am confused! Why is America seeming less progressive? Why are other countries noticing the harmfulness of gender specific advertisements and our country is not? Why are teachers ordered to follow a strict curriculum when the curriculum doesn't include diverse content or gender neutral content? Therefore, I plan to use this Padlet as a resource from which I can teach my students two important things: 1. to reject gender roles and love whatever it is that they love freely and happily. 2. to accept people for who they are and not to put them in a gender box.

Before I include the stories geared for boys I must explain that the female targeted stories were easily found and available on Youtube. The male stories were not easily found are are not even available. Therefore, I would have to purchase these stories from my own budget!
How I will Incorporate This Ideology into my Pedagogy and Curriculum...

I currently teach first grade and I feel if I am going to get the most out of this course I should be using the content to advance my teaching. Everything I compile in this padlet will be for my first grade classroom.

I am very thankful to work in the district I do. That district is Warrior Run and it is a beautiful place to live! It is filled with good American people who work hard. However, it is not the most progressive place on earth. In fact, we of Warrior Run are at times far from progressive or liberal. But as the world changes around us, we too need to change our ideals so our students can successfully include themselves in and contribute to society.

Therefore, my hope is to include content that makes my students aware of what gender roles are and how to refute them and be their own person.

The core Language Arts curriculum content comes from the Storytown Reading Program. Attached, I have included the Storytown skills matrix. The Storytown Reading Program takes almost the entire school year to teach. It is very difficult for me to stray from it even to include holiday content. Also, I don't believe my reading department head would agree with the need for including gendered literacy practices. I feel she would argue the Storytown reading program is already written in a way that makes it free of gender bias. However, I believe I have come up with a plan to include gendered literacy practices into my teaching in addition to following the Storytown Reading Program. Therefore, I don't have a specific unit name. Instead, it will be a classroom theme. Something that reoccurs in teachable moments and when the schedule is flexible enough to allow. If I had to name the content I would title it, Classroom Ideologies.

I plan to use these read alouds and show the media content in the first few weeks of school while I do my teaching of classroom routines and establish rules, expectations, and rapport with students. This is the time when curriculum demands are most flexible. Also, if I use the literature content at the beginning of the year I can reference and quote it throughout the school year.

Before exposing them to the content, I will have my students complete a Venn Diagram where they will compare and contrast boy traits with girl traits. I will collect and keep this Venn Diagram (first few days of school).

We will read and watch the literature content in the first few weeks of school.

I will then follow the curriculum and Storytown Reading Program to teach my core reading.

In lesson 7 of Storytown when I am introducing the focus skill of comparing and contrasting I will pass out the Venn Diagram we completed at the beginning of the school year in the first few days. I will direct my students to cut it apart. They will then repaste the traits that they like for themselves from both circles on an All About Me graphic organizer. I will revisit the focus skill of characters and character traits from Storytown Lesson 5 while we complete this.

For the remainder of the year I will take advantage of teachable moments and correct student thinking appropriately. I will remind students of our stories in social situations and classroom discussions.
