Why upward mobility varies by place

Upward mobility tends to be higher in metropolitan areas where poor families were more dispersed among mixed-income neighborhoods. Income mobility was also higher in two-parent households with better education and more civic engagement. Children who moved at a young age from a low-income home to a higher-income, lived just as the kids that were already receiving a high income. The people are different and the place itself has an effect.

The government has a lot of say in what goes on in our economy but there is only so much they can do to help every single person in the US to become successful. They could help fix some of the worst communities by sending money to help fix and build more schools but it's not going to make a difference if the people in the community don't contribute themselves to make a better environment.

Racial disparities in income and other outcomes are among the most visible and persistent features of American society.
The incomes of Hispanic and Asians are becoming close to those of White Americans, however those of African American and Indian are not. It is shaped by childhood environment. Results show that the black-white gap in upward mobility is driven primarily by environmental factors that can be changed.
