I have so many fond memories of working with him and colleagues in the EU region and for a short time, as his PA. Andy was a wonderful colleague who filled me with confidence at work. A brilliant leader. Kind, funny and such a huge part of British Council. He will be so sadly missed. Sending my deepest condolences to his family.

We all going to miss his open-minded, positive attitude, his intelligence and commitment. I am so sad, there are no words to express my sense of loss.

I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside Andy throughout the past decade.

We have been through so much together – BREXIT, a pandemic, major transformations…
During all this time he has been my sounding board, my shoulder to cry on, my friend, my voice of reason, my mentor.

And quite often we felt like Statler and Waldorf from the muppets, observing all this madness around us and having a little giggle.

Andy was proof that empathic leadership is possible, and I have learnt so much just by working with him.

 I worked with Andy at the British Council in Washington many moons ago, and the office he led there set a high bar for what teamwork should look like and what it could accomplish, in small groups or across cultures. Andy led by example — he was genuine, thoughtful, enthusiastic. And he was kind, equally generous to all. I am glad to have known him for that brief bit of time.

I got to know Andy first in Spain level negotiations when he was Country Director and latterly when as Director EU, he was the company’s interlocutor with the European Works Council. Andy was a great professional and strong negotiator who had the ability to step back and bring clarity into points under discussion. Outside of meetings and negotiations Andy was friendly, open and always supportive.

I knew him through his work with the EWC which was challenging but I will never forget his ability to listen and his professionalism in dealing with difficult issues. He was the ideal Chair to work with as he was always fair and through his many years of experience of working in the British Council understood the concerns.

 

I remember talking to him about his family and he clearly he will be sorely missed by them as a loving husband and father. My condolences to them and his friends.

Over the last few years relations between the EWC and the British Council have been difficult as a result of the fallout from both Brexit and COVID, Andy, as Regional Director EU, led engagement for the company with us and did so with the utmost professionalism. During difficult and at times conflictive meetings, Andy was always able to provide acute insight into the issues being discussed and often added a clarity that benefited both sides. Outside meetings Andy was always personable and engaging, and left professional conflict behind in personal relationships.
