Compare and contrast how the two teachers relate to their students and how the students respond to the teachers.

I feel that the first teacher did not do a good job of relating to her students. Her language and actions seemed to be off-putting. The teacher distanced herself by staying at the front of the class and not being in closer contact with the students. She also was demanding and demeaning to the students. She told one student he was "stressing" her out, she threatened two more with being escorted out of class, and she described another student's behavior as a 2-year-old having a tantrum. The students seemed distant and unengaged. They also did not have any respect for their teacher.

The second teacher had a positive relationship with her class. She had her class engaged, involved, and discussing. The teacher treated her students with kindness. She also had the class treat each other with respect. One student was throwing pens at his classmates and the teacher redirected him to be more kind to his peers. The teacher was among her class by walking around and helping students individually as needed. She used manners with her students and asked what they needed or how they felt. The students responded well to their teacher. They treated her with respect, listened to her lecture, and responded to her classroom management tactics in a timely manner.

Explain why you think relationships are important to the learning process.

I believe relationships are important to the learning process because a positive relationship fosters trust. If there is trust then a child will be more receptive to the learning process. Along with trust, a healthy relationship will be more respectful. If a teacher and student respect one another then they form a partnership. The child will then be more willing to accept a teacher's prompts and directions.

List 2 ways you will foster positive student-teacher relationships in your future classroom. Explain your choices.

The first way I will foster a positive student-teacher relationship with my class is by doing individual morning greetings before they enter the classroom. I will say hello, address them by name, and have them pick which greeting they would like for the day. This could be a high five, a fist bump, or a handshake. I feel that this method is great because it will allow me to greet every child without any distractions. I can then judge their emotions and see if a one on one is needed to further address any issues a child may be having. Also, it is a fun way to start the day.

The second way I would like to foster a positive student-teacher relationship is by having lunch with my students once a week. I would select 4-5 children to eat in my classroom with me once a week. This will allow me to get to know my students on a more personal level which will facilitate an encouraging relationship for all involved.

One way I will foster positive student-student relationships is by having compliment moments. This will be a designated time each day where all the students will give one another a compliment. The students can praise each other’s outfits, hairstyle, or how they did on an activity. I like this idea because it allows all the students to engage with each other in a creative way that allows for self-expression.

The second way I want to promote positive student-student relationships is by having an apology system. If a student puts down or makes fun of another student, I want the one at fault to apologize to the other. This will allow the students to see that being disrespectful is unacceptable and that apologizing is important to maintain a healthy and positive classroom.
