A major Mexican belief is that the afterlife is better then the real world. Another major misconception of the Day of the Dead is that it is the same as Halloween. Many people think this because they are one the same day and they decorate with skulls and similar things. But the truth is that they are very different.

Halloween originated somewhere near Ireland, and was a day to dress up and scare away evil spirits. This day is on October 31st and that is when they thought the spirits came out. That is why we dress up. Dia de los Muertos is a day where you want the spirits to come out. The traditions come from the Aztecs. The spirits would be friends or family who have passed, but this is not a sad day, but a day of celebration. This starts on October 31st, but is celebrated November 1st and 2nd.
