For example, philosophy explores fundamental questions about human existences and family studies looks at personal relationships and societal structures. World religions offers insight into a variety of different belief systems, and equity studies focus on social justice. This range of subjects means students can explore different aspects of human behaviour and societal issues from multiple perspectives.

A challenge I anticipate having as a social sciences teacher is navigating heavy or complex conversations about ethics of real-world issues. Concepts related to power dynamics, social justice, and inequities both currently and historically can be emotionally loaded, controversial, and sometimes divisive. Social sciences teachers need to have strategies in place for facilitating respectful, open, and productive conversation in the classroom. They must work to establish appropriate boundaries while still allowing for students to engage with the material in ways that are meaningful to them as individuals.

For me the thread that connects both courses is this idea of inclusivity and equity. It's very relevant and very practical so it makes sense. Whether we're talking about getting parents involved or how to support children with special needs, there's this consistent message that we've got to meet everyone where they are. This means being adaptable and responsive so schools need to be flexible in how they communicate with parents, and teachers need to be ready to individualize learning for students.-Kayanna

If you're teaching social sciences and humanities, I think one of the toughest things would be tackling social injustice and inequality head-on. You've got to help students develop critical thinking and empathy, and that's not always easy. Plus, we’re also dealing with really diverse classrooms, so we also have to tailor our teachings accordingly. One of the most taxing parts is that it is very emotionally draining because you're often exploring some heavy issues, especially in my specialization as a guidance counselor looking after children.

One thing I learned is that it puts an emphasis on different aspects to help the students grow as people. For example, Disciplined Inquiry and Critical Literacy, Problem Solving, and Understanding of Self and Others, Local and Global Mindedness. These 4 help guide students to be the best possible person they can be.

Every course in Social Science values, amplifies and studies diversity. This is what makes it so diverse. One thing that I love so much about social science is that although it is often a student of trends/patterns/causalities there is so much richness and depth that there is always an acknowledgement and celebration of the diversity of whatever is being studied.

One thing I worry about is being culturally responsive and sensitive to the lived experience of all students. I recognize my own social position and privilege and understand that it impacts the way I teach and approach learning. I want to support my students in the most meaningful and affirming way possible but that goal seems impossible.

Being tasked with reading the 408 page document was at first overwhelming so I learned how to utilize AI to summarize the information so that I could more readily access the information I needed. Being tasked with learning about all the Social Science courses, also felt daunting. This led me to learn more about the teaching requirements for courses in my school board and how it varies between boards in Ontario.
