We understand that postcolonial theory surfaces from the literary theoretical period in the late 20th century and that focuses and provides us questions we can relate to in regards to power and identity. It questions the relationships of each powerful side and how they each dealt with eachother for that power. In Achebe (1959) Things Fall Apart, the most influential postcolonial theme present is identity. In a similar way, Okonkwo is one of the characters who comes from a very well to do from the Umuofia Village in Nigeria. As a young man he has brought honor to his community by fighting and beating the Amalinze the Cat. Before their fight the Cat had not lost any fights in many years. Okonkwo is not compared to this father who was a poor and did not know how to handle money, always borrowed, never paid back his debts and did not like to fight because he did not like the sight of blood. Okonkwo’s father made his family suffer as there was never enough to eat.

Okonkwo is considered to be rich and has three wives and eight children, he provides their own hut and a barn full of yams. Okonkwo has build his success on his own as his own father was not able to be successful with his own harvest due to him being lazy and not taking proper care of his crop.

In a similar way of Okonkwo's life, I came from a low income family and growing up I wanted to also have a better life than my parents. Having success, power and something to show for in life is something I took seriously. I wanted to have a better life in order to give back to my family who did not have much. Not to be showy or better than others but to do for myself without the help of my parents or others. I have done well and I have been successful in my career and I have been able to give back to my community and and my parents. I feel this has provided me to be a little better than where I came from. It makes be proud to be able to give back to those in need, but also appreciate my humble beginning as my parents did instill good morals and values in me.

As an identity relevance I compared the Disney Movie Mulan to Okonkwo and myself.
In the movie Mulan, her father forbid her to become a warrior and to fight. Mulan's dream is to be warrior and impersonates to be a man in order to be part of the warrior group. Mulan is worried that her ill father will be taken and drafted into the Chinese military, so she takes on the role of a man to join the military. Once she is succeeds and done so well, she is then recognized for her bravery. Mulan originally feels that she can not do what she wants because she is a woman and the Chinese view women differently than men. Mulan proves herself wanting to do better, and showing bravery. Perhaps this would open the doors to initiate other women to be brave and join the military and take a stand.
