While visiting family in Money, Mississippi, Emmett was murdered for allegedly flirting with a white woman, Carolyn Bryant. Abducted by the Bryant's brother and husband, Emmett was beaten, mutilated, shot, then thrown in the Tallahatchie River tied to a cotton gin fan with barbed wire. After Emmett's unidentifiable remains were discovered, his body was sent back to Illinois where his mother, Mamie Till, had an open-casket service to show the world what violent racism had done to her son. Jet , a Black magazine, photographed the disfigured body and published for the world to see. Mainstream media picked up the story and a case came soon after.

The NAACP used Emmett's story as a further push towards Civil Rights justice showing just how prominent racial injustice and terrorism was. Following the event of Emmett Till's murder, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. Her motive was said to be Emmett Till's story and the need for change. Revered Martin Luther King Jr. was also deeply impacted by the murder of Emmett Till. Using the outrage caused by Emmett's injustice, MLK and the NAACP would continue to fight for civil freedom and equality. On the 8th anniversary of Emmett Till's death, MLK delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech at the March on Washington.
